About me
My name is Dr. Ryan O'Shea, and I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon proudly serving with Kaiser Permanente in San Diego since 2017. My primary focus lies in treating children with bone and joint issues, although I'm also dedicated to addressing various adult orthopedic conditions and fractures. My mission is to furnish our members with high-quality care for their orthopedic concerns, empowering them to lead vibrant, active lives.
Biography
Southern California is both my birthplace and my home. My journey into medicine began at USC, where I earned my undergraduate degree and crossed paths with my future wife while volunteering at Los Angeles County General Hospital. After finishing medical school at USC, I ventured to Northern California to the San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Program, where I had the honor of learning from remarkable surgical mentors. My family and I then relocated to Toronto, Canada, where I pursued subspecialty training in pediatric orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children before returning to Southern California.
Throughout my career, I have dedicated significant time to sharing my expertise with others. I have served in clinical faculty roles at esteemed programs within Kaiser Permanente, Scripps, and the Balboa Naval Hospital, and I have written publications and presented research dating as far back as 2006. I also have experience serving on the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Orthopedic Leadership team, as the physician in charge for one of our medical office buildings, and as the lead for pediatric orthopedics for Kaiser Permanente Southern California.
About my practice
My expertise in pediatric orthopedic care ranges from sports injuries and neuromuscular disorders to cerebral palsy and developmental hip dysplasia. I'm well versed in addressing limb length discrepancies, congenital deformities, skeletal dysplasia, clubfoot, scoliosis, pediatric fractures, slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), and bone and joint infections. Additionally, I treat various general orthopedic ailments, including upper and lower extremity fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, meniscal tears, and bone infections.
As a devoted father of 2, I approach each member's treatment plan with the same level of care and consideration I would apply to my own children. Every surgical recommendation is weighed against this standard, ensuring diligence and compassion.
We take immense pride in our pediatric care experience, creating close relationships with the pediatric hospitalist team and maintaining a reliable surgical team supported by a dedicated nursing staff. Our specialized team is singularly focused on delivering exceptional care to children, and I am deeply passionate about ensuring their well-being and comfort throughout their orthopedic journey.
How I thrive
I thrive through outdoor pursuits like biking, swimming, surfing, and paddleboarding. In addition, I find joy in cultivating gardens, exploring culinary adventures in the kitchen, and actively participating in my children's school community through volunteering. I also prioritize service to others and have contributed to several medical mission trips, extending aid to communities in both Mexico and Africa.
