About me
I am pleased to have this opportunity to present my credentials to you and share other information about myself. It’s very important that you feel comfortable with me as your cancer surgeon, knowing that I understand your concerns and am capable in helping you achieve your treatment goals. I have been in practice more than 25 years and combine a broad expertise in head and neck tumor surgery with the knowledge gained through many years of personal experience treating thousands of people
Biography
I was born and raised in upstate New York. After receiving a college scholarship and working as an athletic trainer, I was awarded a military scholarship and entered medical school as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1978. Medical training in the military encompassed not only the rigors of traditional medical education but also focused on the challenges of managing wartime casualties. I transferred to San Diego and was drawn to the challenges of cancer surgery and facial reconstruction. I was sent to Stanford University Medical Center for training in cancer and reconstructive surgery and was invited to remain on the faculty. In 1990, I was deployed to the Gulf War and returned to serve as vice chairman of Oakland Naval Hospital. I served as a consultant to the Surgeon General for head and neck cancer (1992-2003) and was selected as director of surgery in the Navy's San Diego bureau—the largest in the Department of Defense. I retired as a Navy captain in 2003.
About my practice
I serve as the regional consultant for head and neck oncologic surgery for all of Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. My practice is entirely focused on the surgical management of tumors and cancers of the head and neck as well as the supportive care required by cancer patients to help expedite their recovery and increase their chance of survival. I am director of the Head and Neck Tumor Board in San Diego and coordinate the multidisciplinary care of complex cancer patients with a team of subspecialty experts. My expertise includes minimally invasive surgery techniques for thyroid, parathyroid, and cancer surgery as well as surgical reconstruction of skin cancer defects, such as those resulting from malignant melanoma. I have been an invited speaker both nationally and internationally.
How I thrive
I enjoy being at home with my wife and children, which keeps me grounded, active, and happy. After growing up on the East Coast, I have embraced the San Diego lifestyle and enjoy outdoor activities, particularly at the beach. My Navy years taught me to work hard and play hard, and my family shares my passion for all sports activities. Still, we relax with music, dining, theatre, and travel at every opportunity. Nothing is more precious than the time we spend together.
