About me

My name is Dr. James Lyons, and I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with specialty training in hands and the upper extremity. I have worked at Kaiser Permanente since 1994.

Biography

Originally from Los Angeles, I attended medical school at Creighton University in Nebraska and returned home to complete both my residency and a fellowship in hand surgery at LA County-University of Southern California Medical Center. My journey with Kaiser Permanente began as a per diem physician during my residency, followed by several years in private practice before joining Kaiser Permanente full time. In addition to treating injuries of the hand, I also have significant experience treating orthopedic traumas all over the body from my time on the trauma team.

Throughout my career at Kaiser Permanente San Diego, I have served as both the lead of hand surgery and the chief of the Orthopedic Department. While I loved serving as a leader in the department, I also found great fulfillment as a mentor to the many residents that have rotated through the clinic, hospital floors, and operating rooms of Kaiser Permanente. I am fortunate to be surrounded by an expert team of hand surgeons that play an integral role in shaping these future leaders in orthopedics. To stay on top of advancements in the field, I stay actively involved in the Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Association for Hand Surgery.

My path to a career in orthopedic surgery was inspired by personal experience. As a teenager, I endured years of pain from an undiagnosed orthopedic condition, which was eventually identified as spastic paraplegia when I was 16. The intelligence, technical skill, and patient-centered focus of the orthopedic physicians who treated me profoundly influenced my decision to pursue this field. Their care inspired me to dedicate my life to helping others in similar situations.

About my practice

Most of my practice focuses on treating injuries and conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow. These include issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, nerve damage, and fractures. I understand how vital our hands and arms are in daily life, and I am deeply committed to helping members return to full function as much as possible. I strive to communicate in clear, understandable terms and share all aspects of care, ensuring that your expectations are realistic and well informed.

Recognizing that hand injuries can happen at any time, Kaiser Permanente San Diego has developed an acute hand clinic to promptly evaluate and treat urgent hand injury cases. Our hand surgeons work collaboratively to provide comprehensive coverage and to tackle more complex cases together. I am passionate about addressing these intricate cases and finding effective solutions to alleviate members' pain.

How I thrive

I love living my life on the water and being active through swimming, boating, biking, and golfing. I enjoy spending quality time with my daughter, whom I also work with to raise awareness about spastic paraplegia. Outside of this advocacy work, I also enjoy providing my expertise to disadvantaged communities. I recently traveled to Mexico to perform volunteer surgeries for patients with hand and extremity issues, and I look forward to more opportunities to give back to communities both inside and outside of San Diego.
