About me
Welcome to Kaiser Permanente and my Web page. Choosing a physician can be a daunting task. My hope is that this will make it easier, and that the information presented here will help you determine if I can meet your needs as a primary care physician. After all, doctor-member teamwork is essential to good medical care.
Biography
I was born in Pomona, California, but my family moved to Muncie, Indiana, when I was an infant. My road toward a career in medicine began when I made my first medical diagnosis at the age of 14—my own appendicitis! I returned to California for good when I started college at Stanford University. After graduation, I worked for a year in biotechnology before moving to San Diego for medical school in 1989. An internal medicine residency at UC San Diego was next, followed by another year there as chief resident. I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1997. When the opportunity to move to the Rancho San Diego Medical Offices arose, I jumped at it, as I live in the area. I have two daughters. The first was born one month before I started with Kaiser Permanente. The second was born two years later.
About my practice
I practice general internal medicine. I am board-certified, and I’m a fellow of the American College of Physicians. In addition, I’m a clinical professor of medicine at UC San Diego—so I will sometimes have students and residents working with me. I find that teaching keeps my perspective fresh. After all, if I’m going to mentor the next generation of doctors, I'd better know my stuff! I spent four years working in Kaiser Permanente's Department of Preventive Medicine, so that is the thrust of my practice. I rely on the other health care professionals, medical assistants, licensed vocational nurses, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other physicians in my office to help me provide our members with high-quality health care. I'm a strong believer in the concept that good things happen when each member of the team practices to their maximum potential!
How I thrive
I've been a life-long tennis player and, since moving to San Diego, I've become an avid surfer. I also love to cycle and hike. I have a love-hate relationship with my yard, but working in it helps me burn calories! Aside from exercise, I like to fill my leisure time enjoying San Diego's cultural richness. I love the theater, the symphony, and even the occasional rock concert (though I always wear ear plugs-got to protect my hearing!). If I'm not doing any of the above, you'll probably find me lost in a good book.
