Get care and stay safe from smoke during the Boyle Heights fire

Last updated: June 23, 2026

Kaiser Permanente is committed to the safety of our members, patients, staff, and community. We are closely monitoring the Boyle Heights fire and the air-quality issues it has caused throughout the area.

Facility updates

At this time, all Kaiser Permanente facilities in Southern California are open during usual operating hours. Facility access may change as the situation develops.

Appointments

For nonurgent appointments and health care needs, we are offering telehealth options — including phone, email, video, or an e-visit by answering questions regarding your symptoms — so you can get care without an in-person visit. To take advantage of these telehealth options, you can visit kp.org/getcare to schedule an appointment online or you can contact our Appointment and Advice Call Center at 1-833-574-2273.

We will continue to evaluate the situation and provide more information as it becomes available.

Reminder: Safeguard your health

It's important to take precautions to stay healthy if you or your family are in an area that is impacted by the fire, including by smoky air. This is especially important for people with respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

  • Stay indoors and keep your windows closed (unless instructed otherwise).
  • Check your local air quality index (AQI) before venturing outside.
  • Use your long-term control medications (like Alvesco or Advair) as prescribed.
  • Use "quick relief" inhalers to help with shortness of breath.
  • If you have oxygen, use it if you have difficulty breathing.
  • Run an air conditioner but keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside.
  • Use fans in each room to help move the air in your house.
  • If you have difficulty breathing and would like medical advice you may reach our Appointment and Advice Call Center at 1-833-573-2273.  If you think you have a medical emergency, call 911 for assistance.

About masks

  • Not all masks that prevent the spread of COVID-19 will protect you from the particles produced from fires.
  • Adults may benefit from using an N95 mask if they have one and must be outdoors. This helps protect you from unhealthy air. Masks must be fitted properly. Masks and cloth face coverings that help slow the spread of COVID-19 aren’t effective for smoke.
  • We don’t recommend children wear N95 masks. They aren’t made for children and may not fit properly. N95s won’t protect them from smoke. Masks and cloth face coverings also can obstruct breathing in babies and young children. It’s best to keep children indoors to reduce smoke exposure.

Prescriptions

If you’ve been displaced and are not near a Kaiser Permanente pharmacy, you can fill your prescription at any local retail pharmacy near you. To have your prescription transferred, give the outside pharmacy your Kaiser Permanente member ID card or medical record number. Also give them the number to our call center, 1-866-385-2644, where they can complete the transfer.

To get medications mailed to your permanent or temporary address, order your refills and prescriptions online or call our Southern California mail-order pharmacy at 1-866-206-2983. Standard shipping is always provided at no cost. Please note, it may take 3 to 5 days to deliver your prescriptions by mail.
