Get care and support during the Southern California wildfires

Last updated: January 13, 2025

Kaiser Permanente is committed to the safety of our members, patients, staff, and community. We are closely monitoring the fires and high winds throughout Los Angeles County and will update this page as the situation develops.

Facility updates

All Kaiser Permanente facilities in Southern California are open at this time — including ones that were closed last week due to evacuations. Facility access may change as the situation develops. We’ll contact you if your appointments are affected.

Care and prescriptions

We’re working to make sure you, as a member, get the information, support, and care you need to support your physical and mental health. You can access most of your usual care options, including 24/7 virtual care and mail-order pharmacy.

Get care

Access timely, convenient care options that work best for you – from 24/7 phone or video appointments, quick online E-visits, or urgent care and other appointments.

For primary care, you can still access phone and video visits on kp.org or the Kaiser Permanente app.

If you have questions about scheduled appointments, call 1-833-574-2273 (TTY 711).

If you’re a Kaiser Permanente member and can’t access Kaiser Permanente services because of the wildfires, you can get covered services from out-of-network providers for the usual cost of your care. If you believe you have an emergency medical condition, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. You can request reimbursement for services provided outside of Kaiser Permanente on kp.org.

Mental health support

For people who have lost homes, been evacuated, or had fires nearby, the emotional effects can be traumatic. People who already have mental health conditions are susceptible to increased symptoms due to the unstable environment.

Even if you don’t live in an area affected by wildfires, it’s possible to feel anxious or upset when hearing the devastating stories of people experiencing loss from fires. Our mental health clinicians are available to assist you.

Prescriptions

For general pharmacy information or to refill a prescription over the phone, please call 1-866-879-3408. If you need an urgent prescription or refill, you can go to any open Kaiser Permanente pharmacy. To search for a pharmacy near you, visit our Facility Directory.

If you’ve been evacuated and are not near a Kaiser Permanente pharmacy, you can fill your prescription at any local retail pharmacy near you. To have your prescription transferred, give the outside pharmacy your Kaiser Permanente member ID card or Medical Record Number. Also give them the number to our call center: 1-866-385-2644 where they can complete the transfer.

We are waiving the delivery fee for our same day or next day prescription delivery services for members in areas that have been impacted by the fires. These areas include Baldwin Park, Los Angeles, Panorama City, South Bay, West Los Anges and Woodland Hills.

To get medications mailed to your permanent or temporary address, order your prescriptions online on KP.org/refill or call our Southern California Mail Order Pharmacy at 1-866-206-2983. Mail order shipping is always provided at no cost. Please note, it may take 3 to 5 days to deliver your prescriptions via mail.

Members in Southern California may also temporarily fill their prescriptions at any non-KP pharmacy by showing their Kaiser Permanente ID card.

For more help, you can call Member Services about:

  • Your coverage.
  • How to redirect or replace your prescriptions.
  • Replacing a lost Kaiser Permanente ID card. You can also access your Kaiser Permanente ID on your mobile app.

Replace lost medical equipment

If you need to replace a medical device, call the Southern California Durable Medical Equipment line at 1-855-805-7363 and let them know you’ve been affected by the wildfires.

How to stay healthy during wildfires

If you’re in an area affected by the current fires, it’s important to take extra precautions to stay healthy. We recommend that you:

  • Stay indoors and keep your windows closed unless instructed otherwise.
  • Run an air conditioner. But keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside.
  • Use fans in each room to help move the air in your house.
  • Follow the National Weather Service safety precautions for high winds.

If you have a respiratory condition, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), you should also:

  • Use controller steroid inhalers (like QVAR) as prescribed.
  • Use quick relief inhalers to help with shortness of breath.
  • If you have oxygen, use it if you have difficulty breathing.

Medical financial assistance

Our Medical Financial Assistance program provides financial help and relief for members who have been affected by the wildfires. We help qualified patients pay for emergency, urgent, or medically necessary care, as well as pharmacy services and products received from Kaiser Permanente providers or facilities. Patients who qualify get some or all of their costs covered regardless of whether they have health care coverage, or are uninsured, or are underinsured.

If you need this assistance, apply now or contact us and make sure to let us know that you’ve been affected by the wildfires.

American Red Cross resources

As a reminder, people can call 1-800-RED-CROSS for the latest shelter information and to access additional support. In addition to being a safe place to stay, Red Cross shelters can help folks with basic care items, mental health counseling, replacing medicines, or even help with pets.

If you are missing a loved one or friend or have become separated as the result of an evacuation or the fires, especially if someone is elderly or has a functional access need or has a medical or mental health condition made more severe by the disaster, Red Cross has resources for reunification at redcross.org. You can also call 1-800-RED-CROSS and ask for help with an “Emergency Welfare Inquiry.”

Community support

In affected communities, Kaiser Permanente is offering clinical care and supplies at evacuation centers, providing respite to our first responders, and contributing financially to organizations that provide direct relief to impacted communities and first responders.

Additionally, the following resources for housing, food, childcare, and other needs are available to those affected by the wildfires:
