Where I practice
I was born and raised in Colombia. I immigrated to the United States in 2003, where I completed my undergraduate studies at Portland State University. I then moved to Canada to start medical school at McGill University. This was followed by residency and fellowship in internal medicine and medical oncology at the University of Ottawa. I returned to Portland with my family to join Northwest Permanente as a medical oncologist. I recently published research about older adults' participation in clinical trials and barriers that contribute to low accrual of older adults to clinical trials. In addition, I recently contributed a chapter on cancer screening for older adults for an upcoming Care of the Elder textbook.
About my practice
My medical oncology practice focuses on breast and gastrointestinal malignancies. I also have expertise in geriatric oncology to provide care for older adults with cancer. Medicine gives me the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those who are needing oncological care, and I take pride in providing patient-centered and evidence-based care to get the best outcome possible for my patients. I am grateful and privileged to be part of my patient's health journey in an integrated system that allows our clinical teams to provide excellent care. As a physician, I strive to develop a trusting relationship with my patients, to learn what is important to them and guide them to make treatment decisions that best align with their personal goals and expectations. At the same time, I am forthcoming and honest about treatment implications and quality-of-life considerations.
How I thrive
Spending quality time with my family, in particular my young child, keeps me energized and focused on what matters most in life. My husband and extended family have been a great support throughout my career. Physical exercise is a group activity in our family. We enjoy running outdoors, hiking, and biking when weather permits.
