About me
I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and have always been proud of my Midwestern heritage. When I finished high school, I wanted a smaller university experience than the University of Wisconsin and ended up at Yale University. After college, I didn’t know what direction I wanted to go professionally, whether into teaching like my parents or into medicine. After spending 2 years in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, West Africa, both teaching high school science and math and helping create a lab in an eye hospital, I returned to the U.S. excited to attend medical school at Tufts University, where I obtained both my medical degree and Master of Public Health, the latter with a focus on international health. After my general surgery residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, I spent 3 years in Baltimore, Maryland, before moving to Denver to join Colorado Permanente Medical Group. Since 2002, I have been very happy as a part of this wonderful medical group.
About my practice
When I went to medical school, I assumed I would become a primary care physician, but found during those years that I was attracted to general surgery, where I could not only solve a problem intellectually, but also potentially fix it. I have never regretted that decision or direction. I love the teamwork of Kaiser Permanente, with my staff and physician colleagues, and especially with our members to work together for health. I take the time to get to know my patients and listen to understand their questions and concerns. Electronic medical records help me to see the big picture of a patient’s health, so I can make good use of our time together and answer their questions.
I mainly care for adult patients of any age. My pediatric practice is limited to hernias for our members as young as 3. I enjoy the wide variety of people and diseases I care for and especially enjoy caring for thyroid and parathyroid problems.
How I thrive
I still travel to Africa at least once per year, taking a team to rural Zambia to provide surgical care in a small hospital that otherwise has no surgeons. I have had the opportunity to bring almost 2 dozen colleagues with me over the years, exposing them to a special place that has helped shape me as a person and surgeon.
At home, I enjoy being in the outdoors, which is one of the things that attracted me to Colorado. When I moved here, I gave up long-distance running, as my knees could only forgive me for so long, and took up road biking. I am an avid hiker and skier and continue to try, often unsuccessfully, to keep up with the weeds in my yard.

Kaiser Permanente may ask whether your request for a hard copy is a one-time request or if you are requesting to receive the provider directory in hard copy permanently.
If you request it, your request for hard copies of the provider directory remains until you leave Kaiser Permanente or request that hard copies be discontinued.
Kaiser Permanente considers the following factors as it builds and maintains provider networks:
- Size and demographics of the population to be served
- The inventory of provider and facility types required to serve the population
- Practitioner-to-member ratios and geographic access standards
- Application of credentialing criteria encompassing but not limited to educational training, licensing, professional experience, board certification, and professional references
You may select a primary care provider (PCP) from family medicine, pediatrics, or internal medicine. When possible, we encourage you to choose a PCP whose office is in a Kaiser Permanente Medical Office Building. You may have a higher copayment and/or coinsurance with certain PCP providers. Please refer to your “Schedule of Benefits (Who Pays What)” for additional details. Use the Provider Affiliation dropdown to sort to Kaiser Permanente providers.
An authorization or referral may be required to access some providers in this directory. If you have questions, contact Member Services.
