Where I practice
About me
I knew I wanted to care for others and started my career in nursing. While working as an RN in labor and delivery at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, I was able to work alongside medical students and residents in training. They inspired me to go to medical school. Just like working in L&D, I loved the team environment of emergency medicine while in medical school, and I am so grateful for the training I received at the University of New Mexico (UNM). However, while training in New Mexico we often cared for the underserved who did not have any other access to a doctor besides the emergency department. This led to having a lot of serious illness conversations in the ER and ultimately led to me finding my calling in palliative care and completing a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at UNM. I worked in McKinney, Texas after fellowship, and we moved back to Texas to be near family when my 2 sons were young. The mountains have been calling my husband and I since we left New Mexico, and we are so excited to now be in Colorado!
About my practice
Practicing palliative medicine is a privilege, as we walk alongside patients facing serious illness. We can provide emotional support and symptom relief to people on their most difficult days and celebrate with them on their best days. This leads to deep connections with patients and their families, and that is the part of this job I find most rewarding. After finding so many of my patients had important questions about how nutrition, exercise and sleep could help their healing process and survivorship, I did additional training in lifestyle medicine. Becoming certified in lifestyle medicine has improved my own life and the health of my family equally as much as it has been a helpful resource for my patients. As much as supportive and palliative care can be serious business, I find there are a lot of laughs I get to share with patients and their families as we find joy even in challenging times, and I am constantly amazed at the resilience of the human spirit.
How I thrive
Part of our decision to relocate our family to Colorado was that our favorite days together were those spent outside hiking, camping, and biking, and especially enjoying our state and national parks. Our family eats a whole food, plant-based diet and we try to stay active together to stay healthy physically. Being intentional about gratitude and spending time outdoors helps me deal with the stress of being a busy mom and physician. I also enjoy running, walking the dog, gardening, and reading romance novels.
