About me
I was born and raised in Iowa City, Iowa, completing medical school and residency at the University of Iowa. I also met my wife in undergrad at UI in a travelling singing group. I am blessed to have such an interesting career that requires the various parts of my brain and personality to work together and allows me to meet and help incredibly interesting and inspiring people.
About my practice
I was drawn to psychiatry because it emphasizes seeing each patient as a unique, complex, whole person and learning how to empower people to use their own gifts and motivations to improve their well-being. I want to work with my adult patients in a supportive and encouraging, rather than directive, role. I see patients as active, informed partners in their care and strive to work in a collaborative manner. I offer my patients convenience and can answer their questions by email, phone, video visit or Chat with a Doc. My goal is to provide the most appropriate care for my patients, so they aren’t spending extra time or money to get the care they deserve.
How I thrive
We have 2 dogs and a very dog-like cat that provide us much entertainment. We love being outdoors and love the midwestern feel of Colorado, plus the mountains, minus the humidity and bugs! A few personal hobbies/interests include playing tennis (and recently stringing my own racquets), running, biking, making espresso drinks, watching most types of sports and recently accumulating camping gear.
I believe physical and mental health are inextricably related. I try to keep moving every day in whatever form that may take, and enjoy simple pleasures like a fresh cup of coffee, the view of the mountains on my way to work and even having the privilege to feel tired after a good day's work.

Medicare Members: To request a hard copy of Kaiser Permanente’s provider directory, please call our Member Services department at 1-800-476-2167, seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Kaiser Permanente will mail a hard copy of the provider directory to you within three (3) business days of your request. Kaiser Permanente may ask whether your request for a hard copy is a one-time request or if you are requesting to receive the provider directory in hard copy permanently.
If you request it, your request for hard copies of the provider directory remains until you leave Kaiser Permanente or request that hard copies be discontinued.
Kaiser Permanente considers the following factors as it builds and maintains provider networks:
- Size and demographics of the population to be served
- The inventory of provider and facility types required to serve the population
- Practitioner-to-member ratios and geographic access standards
- Application of credentialing criteria encompassing but not limited to educational training, licensing, professional experience, board certification, and professional references
You may select a primary care provider (PCP) from family medicine, pediatrics, or internal medicine. When possible, we encourage you to choose a PCP whose office is in a Kaiser Permanente Medical Office Building. You may have a higher copayment and/or coinsurance with certain PCP providers. Please refer to your “Schedule of Benefits (Who Pays What)” for additional details. Use the Provider Affiliation dropdown to sort to Kaiser Permanente providers.
