Where I practice
About me
I was raised in rural Virginia and then went to college at the University of Virginia and medical school at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
I was originally introduced to medicine when I trained as a paramedic in Virginia, where I fell in love with both the physiology of the human body and the problems that can go wrong with it. I found that I enjoy developing a rapport with patients quickly, earning their trust at a time when they are often anxious, worried, or in pain. I try to bring calm and focus to stressful situations and try to provide people with reassurance during their time of need.
My training in emergency medicine (and a desire to explore the West) brought me to Colorado, where we have been since 2012, aside from a 3.5-year stint in Bend, Oregon. I have had the opportunity to practice in level I trauma centers, critical access hospitals, and community hospitals, so I have been able to tailor my practice of medicine to a lot of different venues. I have a lovely wife and 2 little kids who are full of energy and a blast to be around. We will probably add (another) dog to the mix soon, having had multiple dogs in the past.
About my practice
I chose emergency medicine for the broad array of pathology that presents to urgent care and the emergency department. I always enjoyed learning widely and being a "jack of all trades." I also have a passion for the special type of teamwork that occurs in the acute care setting. Technicians, nurses, and doctors work side by side, sharing information in real time with a focus on caring for the patient and providing the best care possible. In the most stressful of situations, I like to portray a calm demeanor that spreads throughout the room and helps everyone focus on the task at hand. In particular, I like tailoring my communication style to the patient and assisting them in making medical decisions. I always welcome questions and like an interactive dynamic with patients. I engage in risk and benefit decisions with my patients, guiding them through an understanding of the pros and cons of medical treatments and tests, including medical uncertainty.
How I thrive
I thrive through spending time with my family, reading widely, and exercising. I like to read a broad array of books with a focus on economics (especially behavioral economics), psychology, history, and public policy. I enjoy long bike rides or runs with a good podcast that I can get lost in, and I find that exercise is where I can relieve the stress of working in a high-pressure environment.
