Where I practice
I grew up in a small town in Iowa and since then I have lived and studied in a variety of locations including Iowa City, Baltimore, San Francisco and North Carolina. I enjoyed each location and am glad to have settled here in Colorado more than 20 years ago with my wife and two children. I enjoy the outdoors, sports and taking long walks. It is a tremendous honor to be able to provide cardiac care to patients and to work as part of the terrific team at Kaiser Permanente.
About my practice
I work with patients ages 18 or older with possible heart-related issues. I am glad to be part of a great team that helps to optimize our patients’ care. Our nurses and medical assistants are terrific, both in the medical office and the hospital. We have outstanding support from highly trained, specialized PhD pharmacists. Our primary care providers and hospitalists are amazing. My colleagues in other specialties work closely with us to provide coordinated care. My partners in Cardiology are excellent and we work closely together to provide care for Kaiser Permanente heart patients.
While a holistic approach is essential, I generally believe that it is important to try to apply the results of clinical trials, when applicable, to the care of patients. I also realize that much of medicine and cardiology is unsettled and controversial. I try to let patients know which pieces of advice are based on extensive well-established data, and what areas are less certain. I believe it’s key to partner with engaged patients regarding health care decisions and to individualize advice based on a patient’s particular circumstances and philosophy. While the internet can be a helpful resource, I believe that it can also create difficulties for patients and providers.
How I thrive
My family and I greatly enjoy the outdoors in Colorado. I appreciate the many cuisines we are fortunate to experience here. I am glad to live in an interesting, diverse city.
