I was born in Ohio and grew up in a small college town in central Indiana. After briefly studying engineering and getting a degree in liberal arts in the Chicago area, I spent a painful year traveling the Midwest, playing guitar in a poorly acclaimed rock band. A few years working for a couple of different non-profit organizations brought me to a camp in northern Minnesota that specialized in helping children and families with special needs. During weeks spent with people afflicted with severe skin disorders, HIV, deafness, mental illnesses, autism, and heart disease, I realized that a career in medicine would provide me the opportunity to combine my aptitude for science with my passion for people. During medical school, I quickly realized that many specialties involved working with people in pain; however, psychiatry allowed me to most directly impact the organ where pain became suffering.
I am a procedural psychiatrist who uses primarily electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation to treat treatment-resistant depression and related conditions. I strongly believe that the therapeutic alliance is an essential part of any psychiatric treatment, and I work very hard to make sure that I understand where someone is coming from before we decide together on a path forward.
I thrive by seeking new experiences, both physical and intellectual. I love to travel, try to be active, and am thrilled by interesting food and drink. Depending on my mood, I tend to bury my nose in classic literature or (much more likely) a crappy, escapist mystery novel. Water in all its forms excites me, and little invigorates me as much as a big thunderstorm.
