I went into medicine because I enjoy working with people and love to put science into action. After 14 years of practicing emergency medicine I still relish the stories and human side of the ER and am just as passionate now as I was when I started medical school. I completed my residency training in emergency medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital, in Connecticut, and hold a master’s in tropical medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Prior to having children, I ran the global health section at Yale and spent quite a bit of time working overseas. I grew up in California and most recently moved from Colorado to Oregon with my wife and two children to be close to family and the outdoors. I spend my free time skiing, biking, and gardening. I grew up playing hockey, and I still try to get out on the ice regularly as a player and coach.
As emergency physicians, we see patients during critical periods in their life and have an obligation to act quickly and efficiently to treat and stabilize life-threatening medical and surgical emergencies. I take pride in having a confident and calm management strategy and taking a priority-oriented approach to critical illness. Beyond medical management, I feel that we are obligated to serve our patients as educators and advocates. I make a concerted effort in my practice to take time to discuss the diagnosis and options with patients and to engage patients and their families as active participants in their care. As the ER experience can often be a pinnacle point in illness, I see my time with patients as an important opportunity for education and prevention.
Physical activity and exercise has always been a guiding principle for how I maintain physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. The ability to integrate exercise and the outdoors truly fuels my soul and makes for a happy me.
