Where I practice
Board-certified in pulmonary, critical care, and palliative medicine, I practice inpatient pulmonary and critical care medicine at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, as well as lead health services research at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research here in Portland. I have expertise in research methodology, quality measurement, quality improvement, translational medicine, and implementation of evidence-based medicine in the areas of obstructive lung disease, dyspnea, and palliative and end-of-life care. Among my leadership roles in science, I am a PI and founding steering-committee member for a multi-center collaboration to improve the care and outcomes of patients with COPD. Over the last few years, I led an effort to build a national infrastructure for patient-led research in COPD, and I won an award for a project improving communication with families in the intensive care unit. I have more than 100 publications.
About my practice
I am a senior pulmonary and critical care medicine physician and regional clinical quality lead for COPD, overseeing COPD guidelines and COPD quality improvement for Kaiser Permanente members. I also serve as the medical director of inpatient respiratory care and am a national methodologist for the Care Management Institute. In my lung and intensive care practice, I value blending research with quality improvement and implementation work.
How I thrive
I find satisfaction in life by balancing time spent with my wife and 2 school-aged kids, exercise, and volunteer service. Balance recognizes that we can't do everything, but we hope that what we have done is meaningful and that at the end of our lives we can sing the Jimmy Buffet chorus, "Some of it’s magic, and some of it’s tragic, but I've had a good life all the way." I am an avid cyclist, riding to work nearly every day, rain or shine, and I also race cyclocross and duathlons. I enjoy camping, and I practice and teach mindfulness meditation. Beyond local volunteer work, I am active with national policy and professional organizations including the American Thoracic Society and the American Association of Chest Physicians. I am president of the Oregon Thoracic Society.
