Where I practice
I was born and raised in North Carolina and attended both college and medical school in Charleston, South Carolina. I chose pathology because I enjoy the visual aspects that this particular specialty provides and the broad subjects covered which are a great, but exciting challenge to me. I met my husband, Charles Kilo, MD at Washington University in St. Louis while in residency; we moved to Boston, MA to finish our training and there began our family, which includes a son and daughter who are 20 months apart in age. As a family we enjoy hiking, kayaking and traveling together. We love being in Portland, Oregon with all of its beauty and artistic enterprises.
About my practice
I am a pathologist so I do not see patients directly, but I believe that what I do, and my interactions with the doctors who then treat our patients, is important to the complete care of our patients at Kaiser Permanente. I have subspecialty boards in hematopathology so I see diseases of the lymph nodes and bone marrow such as leukemia and lymphoma, to name a few, and I have become proficient at transfusion medicine and came to Kaiser Permanente Northwest to help direct our blood bank and be a liaison for any of our physicians or staff who order or administer blood products. Good communication with my colleagues is a key element in my work style.
How I thrive
I keep myself happy and healthy by awaking everyday and starting with at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This gets my day going and keeps me energized for the day ahead. I enjoy healthy eating so I make sure to cook most of my families meals, which is something I enjoy doing. When I am not at work, which I have done on a part time basis most of my career, I enjoy a conversation and literature class in French and classical guitar lessons. I also love meeting my children right after school and taking them home or to their music lessons, but I enjoy finding out about their day along the way. I love gardening in this beautiful city of Portland, hiking, biking and reading to relax and learn more.
