About me
I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved to Portland for college. The slower pace and green landscape were appealing. Eventually, I settled in Salem, where it's an hour each way to ocean beaches, snow, and the big city. In college, I had an inkling of wanting to go into medicine. Like many others, I wanted to make the world a better place. My first job out of college was in administration at a university in Portland. I worked primarily with adult learners with spouses, kids, and jobs who were returning to school full-time to finish their 4-year degrees. These students' stories inspired me. A short time later, I was working on my medical school prerequisites.
About my practice
I became a pediatrician because I wanted to catch kids with the more subtle disabilities and get them the support they needed to maximize their success at life. While I still like doing that, I find it is even more rewarding to get to know wonderful families and follow them as their young children grow into adulthood. I get to smile at little babies, laugh at funny kid socks, and wonder if a teenager's purple hair would look good on me. I also feel privileged when families allow me to help navigate them through the tough times, too. Working for Kaiser Permanente, I'm part of a larger team of pediatricians and pediatric staff across Oregon and Southwest Washington. I get to draw from their expertise through continuing education opportunities and informal chats after meetings. In Salem, we have formed a tightknit group. I know they "have my back" when life happens, and I do the same for them. I also love that Kaiser Permanente lets me use my skills in a variety of ways. For example, I like working on systemwide problems. So I spend a few hours every week optimizing the computer software to better support high-quality pediatric care.
How I thrive
When I'm not busy at work, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I love game night or a good dinner. I also enjoy long walks, sewing, crafts, and good movies. My kids are grown, and I'm finally enjoying a little travel as well.
