Born in Pennsylvania, my family moved frequently and I grew up in such diverse places as Taiwan, Texas, and England. I completed undergraduate studies in Physiology at the University of California, Davis, and then medical school training at the University of California, San Diego. After falling in love with the city of Portland, I did my internship and residency in internal medicine at Oregon Health and Sciences University. I then held hospitalist positions at several area hospitals until our move to Los Angeles in 2003, where I spent three years as a hospitalist with Southern California Permanente Medical Group. Our family was delighted to return to Portland in 2006 and settle down in the house in which we hope to grow old. I am proud to be a part of the Northwest Permanente medical group and to practice in a stimulating environment of efficient integrated medical care delivery such as ours.
I am a practicing hospitalist at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, which means my practice consists of caring for hospitalized patients. I work part time to allow space for balance and my family. I recently completed work in a leadership position on improving the quality of care in the hospital for patients with diabetes and other forms of high blood sugar. Philosophically, I maintain that my role as my patients' "primary physician in the hospital" is to listen carefully to them and their families, and ensure that I gather all of the necessary data and subspecialty input to make excellent medical decisions. I believe strongly in the need to communicate my thoughts and recommendations thoroughly in order to allow my patients to make informed decisions and to receive the best possible treatment plan. I believe ensuring all members of the health care team are aware of the patient's history, goals, and plans is essential to providing personalized care.
I am married to another physician and we have two young children, who are the joys of my life. For renewal, I enjoy running and biking, sometimes competing in races and duathlons. I am an organic gardener, and although I would not say I have a green thumb, I delight in watching the cycle of seed to vegetable or bulb to flower and love getting my hands dirty in the soil.
