Where I practice
I am a Pacific Northwesterner at heart. I was born in Washington and plan to continue my career here in the Northwest. I initially became interested in medicine while attending college in Walla Walla, and after a short stint in the Midwest for graduate school, I hurried back to Portland to complete medical residency and fellowship, and start my practice. I chose medicine because I enjoy teaching and having personal interactions with my patients, and I chose to specialize in infectious disease because I enjoy the challenges in treating and understanding infectious agents that are constantly adapting to therapies.
About my practice
I practice general infectious-disease medicine in both the clinic and hospital settings. I place extreme importance on affability and strive to create a comfortable doctor–patient relationship. In general, I believe I can achieve more by listening rather than talking, and I feel strongly that the overuse of medical jargon diminishes patient satisfaction and understanding. Therefore, when you come to visit me, do not expect fancy words—and be prepared to do most of the talking.
How I thrive
My favorite indoor activity is cooking, which I learned from my Japanese mother. My family always felt that a proper meal every evening, at the dinner table, was the cornerstone of family and home. I have a deep interest in wine and in pairing wine with food to highlight the best characteristics of both. My favorite outdoor activity is whitewater rafting. I was a river guide before medicine and continue to canoe and raft the rivers of the Northwest and Southwest. My favorite partners in all of these activities are my wife, our yellow Labrador, Gru, and our orange tabby, Tapley (if he is interested), along with our extended family (all of whom have an adventurous streak). Maybe I'll see you out on the river sometime!
