About me

My name is Dr. William Luetzow, and I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with specialty training in sports medicine. I have been a member of the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Orthopedic Surgery team since 1993.

Biography

Originally from Dearborn, Michigan, I moved to Southern California to pursue my undergraduate degree at UC San Diego and never looked back. I completed my medical school and residency at UCLA before returning to San Diego for my orthopedic fellowship at Kaiser Permanente. I am fortunate to be actively involved in our Sports Medicine Fellowship, serving as assistant program director, where I collaborate with my colleagues to provide expert training to our fellows. Through this program, our sports medicine team regularly reviews the latest research, techniques, and best practices to ensure we deliver high-quality care based on evidence and current research.

I am an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the San Diego Orthopedic Society. I was a previous recipient of the AAOS Kappa Delta Clinical Research Award and have provided orthopedic care for several football teams at local San Diego high schools. My passion for advancing the field of sports medicine has driven my involvement in arthroscopic advancements throughout my career. I also had the unique opportunity to take a 6-month sabbatical to exchange knowledge with orthopedic surgeons across Italy, France, Austria, Germany, and other European countries.

From a young age, I was driven by a desire to help others through the pursuit of medicine. I was drawn to orthopedic surgery for its hands-on nature and the ability to make meaningful, nearly immediate changes in people's lives. I feel incredibly fortunate to have chosen this career path.

About my practice

With over 30 years of experience, I have had significant exposure to the many conditions and injuries that affect the human body. I primarily treat injuries to the knees and shoulders, which includes procedures like ligament reconstruction, cartilage surgery, and bone realignment. I am passionate about arthroscopy, and it has been incredible to see and participate in its evolution over the past few decades.

While these surgical advancements are exciting, the best part of my job is caring for and connecting with members. I am so thankful to be able to live out my childhood dream every day and work with a skilled, cohesive, and member-centered team.

How I thrive

I believe a good attitude and finding things to smile about are the keys to achieving happiness. Keeping a positive and healthy mind-set, I try to maintain a lean body mass and exercise regularly. I enjoy surfing, swimming, and cycling, and I spent years coaching my sons' baseball teams. I also incorporate stretching and yoga to relieve stress and maintain flexibility. Sometimes to thrive, you just have to take a deep breath, let it out slowly, and embrace the calming effects on your body and mind.
