About me
Hello, and welcome to my Web page! I am Dr. Shan Shan Chen, and I want to thank you for taking the time to get to know a little more about me. I hope you are as excited as I am about partnering for your future nephrology needs.
Biography
I grew up in Myanmar, also called Burma, and moved to the United States after graduation to continue medical training. I completed my residency at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, followed by a nephrology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. While there, I was nominated as Chief Fellow during my second year of fellowship. My original plan was to return to Asia after my training, but I fell in love with the diversity and freedom found in the United States. I ended up joining the University of New Mexico, where I immersed myself in different cultures and traditions. I worked as an associate professor before deciding to move to California. Healthcare has a deep-seated importance to me, and it shows in how I invest my personal time. Currently, I am involved in raising awareness for hepatitis, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome awareness with organizations in Baltimore, and I volunteer for the Myanmar Kidney Foundation as well as other charity activities.
About my practice
I believe the cornerstone of health care is teamwork. Patients are the core member of the team, and a doctor is one of the team members. Everyone works together to improve the health of the core member. Culture, background, and tradition have a lot of influence upon how people accept and make decisions for their health. I try to learn and understand each member as a whole before discussing the treatment plan.
How I thrive
My life is not complete without my family. It is a challenge to ensure work-life balance with a busy schedule, but I focus on prioritizing wellness by setting aside time for myself and my family. We enjoy spending time together, inventing new foods, doing outdoor activities, and watching movies.
