About me
Growing up as the youngest child in a household of eight children in South Los Angeles, I was exposed to a vast range of different people, groups and lifestyles. Although my siblings and I lived in the rougher part of town, we were bused to schools in Hollywood and attended a deaf church for many years. These formative experiences stirred up a passion and curiosity in me for the human experience from a storytelling stand point. What continues to fascinate and excite me is despite the unique experiences we all have, we all still yearn for the same basic things in life: to be loved, to belong and to be useful. What draws me to the behavioral health field is the role I have in people's lives to help them fulfill those deep yearnings in ways that are satisfying, healthy and beneficial to others.
About my practice
My clinical training and experience began shortly after graduating from Tuskegee University as I pursued my master's degree in social work from California State University, Long Beach in 2008. I worked for eight years with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health in settings that were team-driven and recovery oriented for the treatment of adults with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and/or relationship and occupational challenges. Therapeutically as a clinician, I gravitate toward Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is a mindfulness approach to treatment. The aim is to help move our members towards mindful, value-congruent living so they can experience a rich and meaningful life. I am also trained and have a personal affinity toward incorporating spirituality and faith traditions into treatment.
How I thrive
I am privileged to be married to a creative person who shares my passion for story. I enjoy helping him write, produce and direct short films. I also enjoy watching indie films where existential themes of life, purpose and relationships are explored. I love spending time with my daughter by being silly around the house or cuddling up watching Disney movies. I am a dancer and enjoy dancing around the house to my favorite pop artist like Bruno Mars (and yes, Justin Beiber) while cooking a tasty meal for friends and family. I also enjoy participating in church ministry, exercising, and laughing...a lot!
