About me

All my patients have taught me how to become a better provider and person. When you partner with me, your health care combines your self-expertise with my medical advice and medicines. Since 2017, I have been dedicated to the practice of preventive medicine/primary care, with a special focus on obesity medicine and lifestyle medicine. My career took a significant turn when I joined Kaiser Permanente after 7 fulfilling years as a clinical faculty member at Loma Linda's Center for Health Promotion. In my final year there, I had the honor of serving as their medical director. I am proud of my contributions to creating nutrition, physical activity, and obesity medicine curricula for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, which are now implemented in over 500 residencies across the nation. I am an active member of the Obesity Medicine Association, where I contribute to their Obesity Medicine Curriculum Committee. I am also a member of The Obesity Society, where I recently (2022) published an abstract on the use of the botanical ashwagandha and the weight loss medication phentermine. This study explored their combined effects on weight loss, anxiety, and sleep, furthering our understanding of these treatments.

Biography

I am now a Southern California desert dweller, mountain hiker, and beach bum for life, I grew up in Lawrence, Massachusetts, a Spanish immigrant city on the East Coast. Having had enough of the icy snowstorms and seasonal affective disorder from a lack of sunshine, I drove Route 70 in 2016 with my wife (who had recently immigrated from Ecuador) to plant our roots in Loma Linda. There, I completed a preventive medicine residency and obtained my Master of Public Health degree in population medicine at Loma Linda University, one of the premier academic institutions worldwide in preventive and lifestyle medicine. I obtained my medical degree from UMass Chan Medical School - Worcester after graduating summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire with a BA in psychology. I completed honors research on the maintenance mechanisms of depression. I chose medicine after volunteering for a year in a poor rural area in Mantinilla, Costa Rica, during my first year after graduating from college. That year, I served as their community's first aid kit, and the rest is history. I love the hands-on medicine of primary care, and I believe that providers have a sacred privilege to be healers and comforters. I serve the Latino community by investing heavily in my ability to speak Spanish and understand Latino culture. Western medicine is not the solution to everything, and there are rich traditions from many cultures that need to be taken seriously. My wife is from Ecuador, and we have deep connections with her mother and her 10 siblings who still live in Ecuador. We speak primarily Spanish at home. I love spending active time in nature with my wife and close friends. I am passionate about delicious food, which is also "delicious" for our blood vessels and organs. I am a sun, dust, forest, and water bather. Although I have a black belt in tae kwon do, I am not a fighter. I love the discipline, respect, and art expressed through human movements in martial arts like tai chi and qi gong. I love to laugh, make wholesome jokes, and find Netflix/Prime/Hulu gems. I've been a world traveler for most of my adult life, and I treasure the insights I gain about the human condition with each new culture. I avoid tourist destinations and immerse myself in the communities when I travel.

About my practice

I am triple board certified in obesity, preventive, and lifestyle medicine. I also have expertise in how menopause and andropause affect weight gain, and I am well-versed in using hormone replacement therapy safely for American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists-approved reasons. Although I have worked with patients of all ages, I now focus on the 18+ crowd, and I love my chronologically gifted members. To help people lose weight effectively and successfully reverse diseases like type 2 diabetes, psoriasis, and high blood pressure, it takes a village. My practice is dedicated to obesity medicine, a specialty field that focuses on the comprehensive treatment of obesity or excess lipid storage. I work closely with dedicated professionals to provide precise, impactful weight-loss options tailored to your needs. Want just lifestyle solutions? Check! If you are looking for lifestyle and medication-assisted weight loss, check! Need me to help get you ready for a bariatric procedure or surgery and then help keep the surgically assisted weight loss off for life? Check there, too! Not sure what you want but are tired of having the disease of excess energy storage? CHECK! I champion "micro-bursts" of physical activity, which consists of simply taking 30 to 60 seconds to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity, whether standing, sitting, or lying down. Ask me how when I see you in person or via video. We will have fun doing it together and teaching you about micro-bursts also gives me an excuse to keep physically active all day. You want that in your provider, right? I am also open to all religions, faith traditions, and non-spiritual traditions. If you ask me, I will pray to your Higher Power(s) if it enhances our trust and therapeutic connection. Scientific research shows that providers who feel comfortable meeting a particular patient's spiritual needs offer more holistic patient-centered care focused on the patient's sense of ultimate purpose in life. That said, even meditating or taking a few deep breaths with a member before or after a visit can encourage trust and connection. Whatever works for you, please let me know. What matters to you? I want to know. I make no preconceived notions and no assumptions. As a collaboration, we will be more successful when everyone is involved.

How I thrive

I used to be the cleverest person in the world, using fast-food competitor coupons to always get a discount at my favorite McDonald's. I McDon't do it anymore because that clever habit caused me to develop prediabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, high cholesterol, skin conditions, obesity, and allergies. It took 3 years of residency in lifestyle medicine and a wife with a natural talent for cooking delicious food that is also healthy for me to embrace a primarily plant-based diet (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, ancient grains) that is whole (unprocessed chemically or mechanically milled). The proof, though, is in the "non-dairy pudding." I reversed all the above diseases while losing weight in the process! Although, in large part, I thrive on my purpose as your provider, my health is as important as yours, and trust me, you want a provider to tell you this. This ensures that they will take your health seriously and have a healthy boundary of what is achievable in a 20-minute visit. I hope to model to members how to be somewhat "stingy" with their time, allocating it like fine gold or silk. I don't lose an hour of precious sleep to enjoy reading a book or going to an exercise class. I will make time to do both and other noteworthy, material tasks might be on the chopping block. Why? Total Health is why. The balance is different for each of us. Let's find your balance! Let’s get you in the zone!
