Where I practice
Hello, and welcome to my Web page. my name is Mashal A. Shamel and I am glad to have the opportunity to introduce myself. I specialize in emergency medicine, and began my journey at Kaiser Permanente in 2009. I feel fortunate to be able to work at Kaiser Permanente and provide care to our critically ill patients.
I first fell in love with the field of emergency medicine as a volunteer at San Francisco General Hospital while an undergraduate at UC Berkeley. As an eager student, the bustling activity of the emergency department enthralled me. My undergraduate and subsequent medical education has been focused to help me attain my goal of being a successful and compassionate emergency department physician. The most challenging aspect of emergency medicine as caring for patients and making decisions with limited background information. For me, taking the time to handle a difficult situation successfully brings a tremendous sense of accomplishment and personal reward. I moved to Southern California in order to be close to my extended family. I currently live in the area with my husband and my young daughter. Being close to family has been a blessing for myself and my growing family.
About my practice
I have observed that Emergency Department patients are often traumatized by their medical situation. Added to this, is fear of the unknown, unfamiliarity with medical procedures, and a myriad of questions that go unanswered. My goal is to open avenues of communication with those most in need, in order to ease fears and relate on a personal level.
How I thrive
Diversity of life is as crucial to the mental well-being as it is to the physical well-being of an individual. To this end, I firmly believe in a well-balanced life. I enjoy family time with my husband and daughter and we often go to the park, zoo, or the beach! I remain active by going to the gym at least three times a week. I also enjoy the outdoors and love to hike. I make it a priority to set aside time to just relax or read a good novel.
