About me
Hello! My name is Dr. Joseph Li, and thank you for taking the time to read this page and getting to know me. I look forward to getting to know you and caring for you as well. I recognize that the physician-member relationship is a sacred bond of trust, one that is usually formed during what may be the most stressful time in a member’s life. I also believe that members see physicians not only for cures but also for perspective, and I aim to provide you both while working as your partner in health and wellness.
Biography
I was born and raised in Southern California. My mother and father were first-generation immigrants to the United States, and they instilled in me the ideals of diligence, empathy, and honesty. They labored their entire lives to provide me and my sister with the opportunities to pursue our dreams, which for me was medicine. Even as a middle schooler, I was attracted by the intellectual challenge of understanding human biology and physiology. As I grew older, I learned to appreciate the art of medicine as well. Facing illness is probably the most difficult experience in life, and it can be daunting to find a physician that one can trust with this responsibility. Inspired by this challenge, I worked diligently to become a physician who can provide accurate diagnoses and care based on current evidence and research while maintaining a healing relationship with my members. I graduated summa cum laude as a Renaissance and Presidential Scholar from USC with a bachelor of arts in biological sciences and minors in health communication and cultural competence in medicine. I then studied at USC’s Keck School of Medicine on a full academic scholarship and was awarded the American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award in Washington, DC, for my work as the chair of the school’s multidisciplinary student-run clinic. It was through working side by side with occupational therapists, pharmacists, and physician assistants at this clinic that I learned the value of a team approach to healthcare. I subsequently pursued a specialty in internal medicine through the residency program at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center, where I cared for thousands of underserved patients with advanced and rare conditions. As the majority of patients at the hospital were Spanish-speaking, I was also able to hone my medical Spanish. Now, I am a board certified internal medicine physician, and since graduating, it has been my honor and privilege to practice as a hospitalist at Kaiser Permanente’s Baldwin Park Medical Center. I look forward to using my education and expertise to serve you and your family.
About my practice
As a hospitalist, I care for acutely ill members by admitting them from the emergency room into the hospital and by directing their care daily during their hospital stay. Some of my time is also devoted to checking in on members who are recovering at our affiliated skilled nursing facilities. I strive to be meticulous and compassionate each and every day. It is my responsibility not only to diagnose and treat my members but also to empower them with medical knowledge. I do not take the opportunity to be their doctor for granted. It is also part of my responsibility to care for the families of my members as well by keeping them informed of their loved ones’ progress. I recognize that being hospitalized is a stressful experience for members and family members, and it is my goal to lead them through these difficult times.
How I thrive
My family always keeps me grounded. And I, in turn, am inspired to give them my best each and every day when I return home. I strive to eat a healthy diet so that I can be there for my family and my members decades down the line.
