About me

Hi, and thanks for visiting my Web page. I've been a family physician for close to 20 years.

Biography

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, went to UC Berkeley, for college, got my medical and public health degrees at Boston University, family medicine residency training at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, and sports medicine fellowship at UCLA. In medical school, I was selected as a Boston Albert Schweitzer Fellow and later started the Los Angeles chapter of the fellowship: an inter-professional program to support graduate students’ development into “Leaders in Service,” addressing health care disparities in underserved communities all over Los Angeles.

About my practice

I have served as the regional program director for the Kaiser Permanente Community Medicine Fellowship, assistant fellowship director for the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, and assistant program director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. For the last 5 years, I have been the assistant chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Kaiser Permanente’s Los Angeles Medical Center and served for 6 years as the program director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. I still practice outpatient medicine and have a panel of members I love. I am one of the founding faculty at the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine in Pasadena and work with medical students based at a clinic in Skid Row. I am also the faculty mentor for students working at temporary shelters in Pasadena. My general philosophy is that making the right lifestyle changes can make a big impact and is preferable to medication. But I also understand making those changes is not easy and requires systemic changes and/or major reconfiguring of people's lives. But I would like to help support members through that journey to wellness.

How I thrive

I definitely try to practice what I preach. My priority is my health, so not only am I able do my job taking care of members and teaching students, but so I can spend quality time with my wonderful wife and kids, able to travel the world, hike around Mont Blanc or Patagonia, taste the delicacies of San Sebastian, and just in general live a full life. I run and bike regularly and value the camaraderie of spending time with my running and biking buddies.
