About me

My name is Dr. Joan Williams, and I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. I specialize in foot and ankle injuries, arthritis, and other related issues. I have been a member of the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Orthopedic Surgery Department since 2019.

Biography

Originally from Iowa, I moved to the West Coast for medical school at USC. I then pursued a surgical orthopedic residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, followed by a fellowship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.

As a former faculty member at UCLA and recipient of an award for expert teaching at the bedside, I truly value member and family education throughout the orthopedic journey. Open communication is essential to ensure everyone understands the expected outcomes of surgery and feels comfortable asking questions. I stay current with advancements in the field through my involvement with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Having played soccer all my life, I have a deep connection to caring for athletes. My colleagues and I treat a wide variety of athletes across San Diego, including members of the women's soccer team, the San Diego Wave. I love witnessing the enthusiasm of the fan base and supporting women's sports.

About my practice

My clinical expertise includes complex joint reconstruction, deformity correction, fractures, and sports-related injuries. As a former marathon runner and athlete, I am dedicated to helping members return to their desired lifestyle as efficiently as possible. With our strong orthopedic team, we can offer a wide variety of subspecialties across our clinics to ensure members receive the most specialized and effective care possible.

I believe it is crucial to understand the lifestyles and activities members enjoy to create the best treatment plan for them. I am always interested in how various aspects of their lifestyle impact their overall health and wellness, particularly in relation to their musculoskeletal fitness. I strive to ensure that all their concerns and questions are thoroughly addressed.

How I thrive

Time with my family brings me immense joy, and I cherish sharing my life with my husband and our little one. I always strive to achieve balance in my life, making time for outdoor activities, exercise, and adequate rest whenever possible.

When I am not with members or in the operating room, I enjoy volunteering. I have had fulfilling experiences working with children whose parents were victims of domestic violence, children with congenital conditions, and participating in medical missions in countries like Vietnam.
