About me
Welcome, and thank you for visiting my Web page. I am pleased to have the opportunity to introduce myself and I hope this information helps you feel comfortable with your care in the department of General Surgery at Kaiser Permanente. I have been at Kaiser West Los Angeles since 1992, and Chief of Surgery since 2011. Our hard-working surgery department does its best to give high-quality patient care and make the experience of surgery as smooth as possible.
Biography
I was born in Los Angeles, just one block from where the Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center stands today. My father was an immunology researcher, and my mother was an elementary school teacher. My siblings include an artist, a radiologist, and a professor of music. I went to UCLA, first for undergraduate studies in Biology and then for medical school. After two years of Internal Medicine residency at Harbor-UCLA, I did my General Surgery residency at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. I chose medicine, and specifically surgery, because I enjoy the hands-on work, the gratifying relationships with interesting patients, and the camaraderie with staff and other physicians. My ever-supportive husband is an ophthalmic plastic surgeon at UCLA, and we have two great children, a son and a daughter, who keep us endlessly amused, and perpetually proud.
About my practice
I enjoy my practice because it includes a variety of procedures and a diverse group of patients, each unique. My practice includes breast and general surgery. I spend as much time as possible preparing patients for what is often a major event in their lives. Every surgery requires teamwork, and that team includes, foremost, the patient and the patient's family and friends, people behind-the-scenes, in the office and OR who are essential to making the surgery a success. I appreciate working at Kaiser, because here, it is the patient and the doctor who make the choices and decisions about the right path of care. I thoroughly enjoy my time with patients, the nursing and hospital staff, and the other doctors; they help me look forward to each day. I love the practice of medicine. Not only is it a very fine art, it constantly helps me keep a healthy perspective on life, and gives me focus and appreciation for what is truly valuable.
How I thrive
In order to thrive, it is important to never stop growing. This requires a constant push beyond the comfort zone, to learn something new, and meet people who think differently and have different experiences than I do. Traveling, swimming, hiking with the dogs, camping on the Oregon coast, appreciating the beauty of nature, laughing with friends and family; these activities are my therapy. They keep me centered and help me live well.
