Hi. and welcome to my Web page. I'm happy to introduce myself to you and tell you about my work. I have been a psychiatrist and addiction specialist for nearly 30 years. Kaiser Permanente has given me the opportunity to work with many excellent colleagues and to help treat the mental conditions and addiction concerns that have caused great difficulties for some of our members and their families.
I am originally from New York, but when my wife and I started a family, we chose to come to beautiful San Diego. Apparently we were not unusual in making that decision, as many others have also moved here to make this city the significant place it has become.
Although I started in general psychiatry, almost all of my time is currently spent working on problems of addiction to alcohol and drugs. In my role as Physician-in-Charge, I have great assistance from our team at the Chemical Dependence Recovery Program. I feel strongly that addictive disease is a biological vulnerability that some people have through no fault of their own. However, in order to minimize their problems with addiction, patients generally need to actively and consistently participate in their treatment and recovery. If not, the addictions will tend to take over and greatly harm their lives.
I believe that physical and mental health can usually be improved with proper attention to exercise, good nutrition, healthy thinking, and involvement with others. My wife and I have been fortunate to keep close family ties and maintain active interests in cultures around the world.
