About me
My name is Dr. Benjamin Gray, and I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty training in hand and upper extremity surgery. I have been practicing since 2015 and joined the team at Kaiser Permanente San Diego in 2021.
Biography
I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and studied chemical engineering at University of Notre Dame. I completed medical school at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago and my orthopedic residency at Washington University in St. Louis. I finished off my training with a fellowship in hand surgery at the University of Cincinnati. I spent my first 6 years of practice at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), where I completed a master of science in clinical epidemiology. While serving as part of the faculty at UPenn, I had the opportunity to teach residents, medical students, and fellows, and I was the director of hand research and a member of the hand transplant team.
Orthopedics first called to me after shadowing an orthopedic surgeon in high school. I had never seen such incredible skill and attention to detail before, and I knew it was something I was meant to explore. I ultimately decided to focus on hands and the upper extremities because I truly enjoyed the intricate and complex anatomy of this part of the body.
Because I am passionate about contributing to the field of orthopedics, I have authored over 20 scientific publications and spoken at conferences across the country. I have also served as a member of the quality improvement committee here at Kaiser Permanente and am involved in several professional organizations such as the American Association for Hand Surgery and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
About my practice
I love everything about the hand and am confident treating all ailments from nerve issues, such as carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel, to degenerative arthritis, trigger fingers, Dupuytren's disease, and more. I also have experience treating traumatic injuries of the hand and upper extremity such as fractures and ligament tears.
I believe that a well-informed member and joint decision-making create the foundation of a successful treatment. I make sure to provide all the pros and cons of each available treatment option and ensure that expectations are set appropriately. I am fortunate to have a very communicative team supporting me both in and out of the operating room, which ensures we can provide the high-quality care.
How I thrive
My family is my rock. I have a loving wife and 3 beautiful children that I love spending time with. I enjoy exercising and exploring the San Diego outdoors by mountain biking, hiking, and playing with my kids. I also love relaxing on the beach and have enjoyed trying to learn how to surf with my oldest son. When I am not being active, I enjoy embracing my inner foodie with my wife by cooking together and exploring new restaurants.
