About me

Welcome. I specialize in treating children and young adults with a variety of allergic conditions, including asthma, allergic rhinitis (nasal allergies), food allergies, atopic dermatitis (eczema), urticaria (hives), and inborn disorders of the immune system.

Biography

I was born in New York City. Despite being born into a musical family and having a love for the arts, I chose to become a doctor because I am fascinated by science and have a strong desire to be with and help people. My love for children led me to a pediatric residency, and through a keen interest in the immune system and treating patients with allergic disorders, I undertook an allergy and immunology fellowship. I moved to San Diego in 1991 to join Southern California Permanente Medical Group. I get great satisfaction through helping my patients overcome potentially debilitating medical conditions. Current technology allows most of our patients to have healthy childhoods, attend school without absences, and participate fully in sports. I also treat young adults with allergies or immunologic conditions, and this has given me an opportunity to broaden my skills and my impact. Particularly gratifying is the opportunity I have to watch my young patients grow as I continue to care for them into adulthood.

About my practice

I consider it a great privilege to work for Kaiser Permanente. I always strive to treat my patients as if I were treating members of my own family- with skill, care, and compassion. I have a strong belief in the basic mission of our medical group to provide excellent medical care. In particular, I feel that our allergy department is one of the finest in the county and I have been honored to practice with my wonderful partners. Working here has allowed me to participate in some of the most important asthma and allergy studies in the past 15 years. I have also had the opportunity to author several papers, many of which focus on the role of breastfeeding in the development of allergies and allergy prevention in general.

How I thrive

My greatest source of support is my wonderful wife and two teenage daughters. I help my body to thrive by keeping fit-I run up to 20 miles per week and lift weights as well. I love spectator sports, though my allegiances tend to betray my New York origins as well as my two-year sojourn in North Carolina, despite my love for my adopted hometown of San Diego. (In particular, I am a big New York Mets and Jets fan and I love watching Duke University basketball.) I come from a musical family and participate in music-making myself. I am a member of the San Diego Master Chorale and we sing regularly with the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Chamber Orchestra, as well as having our own concert series. I am particularly proud to have been chosen to sing solos on several occasions. I am also a pianist and enjoy accompanying my wife, an oboist, and my daughter, a cellist. My wife and I enjoy traveling, cooking, and opera, and I am an avid reader with an interest in American history.
