Getting laboratory tests during the strike

What is happening

Some of our outpatient laboratories, including routine blood draw locations, are temporarily closed due to a labor strike. We apologize for any inconvenience. Our commitment to safe, high-quality care remains unchanged and we have plans in place to ensure you get the care you need during this time. 

What you should do

  • Complete your urgent lab tests by visiting any open laboratories listed below.
  • Walk in or make an appointment to take your lab test. Appointments are recommended but not required. Schedule one on kp.org, or by calling 855-522-2778.
  • If appropriate, based on your clinical needs, non-urgent and routine laboratory tests may be completed at a later date, as advised by your care provider or care team. 
  • Plan for longer wait times than usual in our labs, and to get the results for certain non-urgent tests. Urgent and critical lab testing will continue safely within our hospitals, emergency departments, and urgent care facilities.
  • Keep your appointment. If you have a lab appointment, keep it. Most appointments won’t change. We’ll contact you directly if yours must be rescheduled.

Q: Will I be able to get laboratory services during the strike? Why is the lab I typically visit closed?
A: Due to staffing impacts from a labor strike, some outpatient laboratories – including routine blood draw locations – are temporarily closed or have limited hours. Wait times in our labs may be longer than usual. We apologize for any inconvenience.

 

Q: I have a lab appointment scheduled. Should I keep it?
A: Yes. Most appointments will not change. We will contact you directly if yours needs to be rescheduled.

 

Q: I don’t have a lab appointment. Can I schedule one?
A: Yes, it is recommended but not required. Schedule lab appointments on kp.org, through the KP app, or by calling 855‑522‑2778 or (855)-LAB-APPT.

 

Q: My doctor told me that I have urgent or time-sensitive lab tests to complete. Where should I go?
A: Please go to any of the open labs listed on this page.

 

Q: When will my lab results be ready?
A: Turnaround times for lab results depend on the type of test you get. Due to our reduced workforce, results for certain non-urgent tests may take longer than usual.

 

Q: Can I wait to get lab work done at a more convenient time? Will the lab order expire?
A: If appropriate, based on your clinical needs, non-urgent and routine laboratory tests may be completed at a later date, as advised by your care provider or care team. Follow your personal action plan or the advice of your care providers to ensure your test is done in a safe time frame. Lab orders expire after six months.

 

Q: What if I have a test specimen at home that I need to drop off?
A: If you have collected a specimen at home, you can drop it off at any open lab listed on this page.

 

Q: Can I go to a hospital or urgent care to get my labs done?
A: Hospital and urgent care labs are for patients who are hospitalized, in the Emergency Department, or who require urgent care. Check kp.org/SCALLabTests for the most current information about locations and operating hours.

 

Q: Can I get my lab work done at a non-KP facility?
A: All lab tests must be done at a Kaiser Permanente facility, unless your physician has directed you to obtain a test at another, specific location.
