About me
After moving several times throughout my childhood, my family settled in the Chicago area where I went to high school and medical school. I spent much of high school swimming competitively, and then gave that up due to the rigors of a pre-med program at the University of Michigan. I came to Portland, Oregon to do training in general surgery, and came to realize that cardiac and thoracic surgery was my interest. From there, I spent time working at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, at Yale University as a heart and lung transplant fellow, and then on to the University of Southern California. After finishing medical training, my family and I returned to Oregon. We settled in to a growing practice, family, and community in Salem. While in Salem, I was able to be part of an increasingly large and strong heart surgery program with excellent outcomes placing us in the top 10% in the nation. The opportunity to join a new, ambitious program at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center was attractive. Our program here at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center was started with the goal of being the best program in the Northwest, and I am glad to say that we have been able to reach a ranking of being in the top 12% in the country to this point. My family and I look forward to seizing the opportunities that this new program and this city provide.
About my practice
My practice is primarily cardiac surgery, although I also enjoy non cardiac thoracic (chest) surgery. The most common surgery we perform is coronary bypass surgery, followed by heart valve surgery and aortic surgery. I have interest in surgery for atrial fibrillation as well, as this is a common problem and can be very troublesome for some people. I most enjoy seeing patients do very well with these major surgeries. For most people, this is the biggest health issue in their lives, and to be able to treat it well is very satisfying. I take great pride in having results that are significantly better than those that are expected for these problems and operations.
How I thrive
Currently, I get most of my pleasure in watching my two early teenage children grow. Their intelligence, talent, and emotional and physical growth are a wonder to see and it is a great privilege to help guide them and introduce them to new activities and ideas. I personally enjoy swimming, bicycling, some hiking and snow skiing to stay fit. I enjoy traveling and exploring cities, towns, and finding new adventures and experiences as much as I can. I try to combine a trip to an exciting location along with a stimulating educational meeting a couple of times each year. I also enjoy an annual summer trip back to Chicago and the beautiful lakes of northern Wisconsin with my extended family.

Referrals to affiliated community physicians/providers in Oregon and Washington
Affiliated community physicians/providers are not part of the NWPMG (Northwest Permanente Medical Group). They are physicians/providers credentialed by Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Northwest and/or who have a contract with the NWPMG.
If your NWPMG physician decides that you require covered services not available internally from an NWPMG physician, he or she may refer you to an affiliated community physician/provider. You must have a written, authorized referral from Kaiser Permanente in order to receive a covered service from an affiliated community physician/provider.
Referrals to affiliated community dentists in Oregon and Washington
Affiliated community dentists are not part of PDA (Permanente Dental Associates). They are dentists credentialed by PDA for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Northwest, and they have a contract with PDA.
If your PDA dentist decides that you require covered services not available internally from a PDA dentist, he or she may refer you to an affiliated community dentist. You must have a written, authorized referral from Kaiser Permanente in order to receive a covered service from an affiliated community dentist.
