About me
I'm a Native New Yorker, or Nuyorican to be more exact, and the first of my family to graduate college. I did my undergraduate studies at Brown University, and medical school in Newark, New Jersey, at the height of the AIDS crisis. I learned during that challenging time that healing a patient is always possible even when there is no cure. I was drawn to internal medicine to care for adults of different ages, life circumstances, and illnesses. Later, I spent part of my career caring for our elders in long-term care settings and served as the medical director of several nursing homes in New York City. I became interested in telemedical care before COVID-19 and have provided telemedicine visits for facilities since 2019.
About my practice
As a virtual primary care physician, I don’t see my patients in person but instead provide care primarily via video (preferred) and telephone visits. When patients need to be seen in person, one of my care team colleagues can see them, and together we’ll coordinate care. My experience in my role has given me confidence that I can develop meaningful relationships with my patients and work together with them and others on our care team to create effective comprehensive care plans.
My practice focuses on telemedicine care, and my goal is for my patients to feel they have been touched through the screen. I want to know my patients, and sometimes a virtual view helps me understand their life and barriers to care. While I am bilingual English/Spanish, my most important language is listening and translating medical jargon to create understanding. Creating that personal connection and understanding gives my patients the best opportunity to have a good health outcome.
How I thrive
I have been moved and motivated by a variety of music throughout my life. I am never without a background soundtrack, be that jazz, salsa, R&B, or country. I learned a love of cooking from both sides of the family, and my grandfather owned a 24-hour, 365-days-a-year restaurant in Spanish Harlem. I think he would like my arroz con gandules, but the doctor in me limits the pernil to the holidays. I have always lived somewhere near an ocean; it must be the island in my soul.
