About me
I am Dr. Jian Xu (pronounced “gin shoe”). I grew up in San Francisco as a first-generation immigrant from Mainland China. After high school, I enlisted in the U.S. Marines to escape poverty and see the world. This formative period of “baptism by fire” transformed me from a sulking teenager into an adult. In 2009, at the tender age of 34, I resigned from the Marines and joined the Navy to study medicine. During my service, I had regularly witnessed great people with strong hearts triumph over unbelievable hardship, which inspired me to do the same. There was simply no greater honor than to serve our nation’s warriors, first as a communications officer and defense acquisition professional, and later as their family physician. My 28-year journey was marked by much travel and sacrifice by the family. In return, I was richly rewarded with a supportive wife, four exuberant children (three of which summited Mount Fuji with me in 2019), and free education (BS, MS, and MD, all paid for by Uncle Sam). I am grateful to join the KP family after I retired from the military in 2022. I intend to uphold KP’s reputation of exceptional service to the community.
About my practice
As your family physician and primary care provider (PCP), I will strive to be a physician for the whole, multi-generational family. What invigorates me every day is the opportunity to gently guide my patients toward better health outcomes, using patient-oriented evidence that matters (POEM). As a former Navy physician, I firmly believe that an ounce of preventive healthcare (e.g. birth control, immunization, cancer screening, healthy lifestyle choices) is better than a pound of damage control “sick care”. As a racial minority with immigrant roots, I have a special interest in the well-being of all marginalized members of our community: the poor, young adults, veterans, assault victims, and LGBTQ. Overwhelmed parents, distressed kids, and empty nesters? I care about you too! I embrace diversity and respect patient autonomy. I am your primary healthcare champion from cradle to grave.
How I thrive
Outside of the clinic, I intend to practice what I preach about healthy lifestyle choices, so that I may set a good example for my patients and my own kids (ages 7, 10, 12, and 14 in 2022). There is much to do in the outdoors as well as soul-searching from within. The time for a health identity rebirth is now! Join me daily in the following self-love and self-care activities:
• Embrace mindfulness (healthy mindset and body as an achievable self-identity).
• Embrace sleep (7 to 10 hours of quality sleep every night as a goal).
• Embrace hunger to maintain healthy weight (e.g. skipping 3 to 6 meals every week).
• Embrace food quality over quantity (e.g. more fruits and veggies; less TV dinner and takeout).
• Embrace movement in small, achievable doses (frequent short walks, standing desk, less sitting).
• Embrace and strengthen social relationships; decrease screen time and social media use.
