2013 Best in Class (health care category) - KP flagship mobile app

IMA recognizes the highest standards of excellence in website design and development, and honors individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements. The Best in Class award is the highest honor bestowed by the Interactive Media Council, a nonprofit organization of leading Web designers, developers, programmers, advertisers, and other Web-related professionals.

New Media Awards

2013 Best in Industry award in the Health/Nutrition category

New Media Awards recognize achievements in new media communications and are sponsored by New Media Institute (NMI), a research and fact-finding organization whose mission is to improve public understanding of issues surrounding the Internet and other forms new media communications. NMI works directly with the news media, researchers, academics, government, and industry professionals and serves as a primary resource of facts, statistics, and analysis. Unlike many Web awards competitions, New Media Award finalists are not selected based solely on design, but on how well they are using this technology to serve and communicate to their audience.

Hospital Website Transparency Award

2013 Hospital Website Transparency Award with Distinction

Kaiser Permanente Foundation Hospitals have been selected as a recipient of the 2013 Hospital Website Transparency Award with Distinction. Based on website features and/or innovations, Kaiser Foundation hospitals were named one of three hospitals or systems that have been chosen for this award by a prestigious panel of judges. The nationally recognized Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC) and The Leapfrog Group, an employer-based coalition advocating for improved transparency, quality and safety in hospitals, developed the Hospital Website Transparency Awards Program to identify outstanding hospital websites that promote transparency of quality measures in a manner that is useful and user-friendly for consumers.

The eHealthcare Leadership AwardsKaiser Permanente is not responsible for the content or policies of external Internet sites, or mobile apps. recognize the best websites of organizations in the health care industry. Health Care Communications, the publishers of eHealthcare Strategy & Trends (a monthly newsletter on Internet strategy) and Strategic Health Care Marketing (a monthly publication for health care executives), sponsors this annual awards program.


The 4 awards that Kaiser Permanente was recognized for this year are:

  • Organizational Commitment (Kaiser Permanente) – Gold Award: Kaiser Permanente was one of only five health care organizations recognized for eHealthcare Leadership Organizational Commitment and the only health care organization recognized in its category. The top award distinguishes Kaiser Permanente for its commitment to using online and mobile technologies to support its mission of total health through consumer and employee engagement.
  • Best Patient Access and Convenience ( – Platinum Award: Kaiser Permanente and were recognized for the comprehensive electronic health record system which connects members to their health care providers and their health information. More than 4.4 million members are registered to use, which enables members to access their health records, view lab test results, email their physicians, order prescriptions and make, change and cancel appointments for themselves or for family members.
  • Best Mobile Communications (KP App) – Gold Award: The KP App empowers Kaiser Permanente members with easy and convenient tools and information to manage their health care anywhere in the world. Members can view medical records, make appointments, refill prescriptions, view lab test results, send messages to their care providers and more. The app is available free of charge on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and has been downloaded more than 670,000 times.
  • Best Site Design ( – Gold Award: The website provides Medicare beneficiaries with easy access to information about the four parts of Medicare (Parts A, B, C and D). It outlines eligibility requirements, and clearly illustrates cost and coverage options. Eligible customers can enroll in Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare plan directly from the website. In 2012, the website recorded nearly 2 million visits, a 100 percent increase over the previous year.

Winners of the 2013 eHealthcare Leadership Awards were selected from more than 1,100 entries. Judges looked at how websites and other digital communications compared with others in their organization’s classification. They also reviewed entries based on a proprietary multi-point standard of Internet excellence. The best overall Internet site category, for example, had to pass muster on more than 40 factors.

Web Health Mobile Awards

Silver Web Health Mobile Awards received by Kaiser Permanente’s flagship app (July 11, 2013)

The Web Health Mobile Awards recognize high-quality digital health resources for consumers and health professionals. The awards program is organized by the Health Information Resource Center, a 20-year old clearinghouse for professionals who work in consumer health fields.

WebWatch logo

Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare Health Plan website received MedicareWebWatch certification, and scored the highest rating among 137 Medicare Advantage websites nationwide for a second consecutive year, according to HealthMetrix Research Inc. Ratings are for excellence in content, member connectivity, design and privacy assurance.
