Care at home: Giving patients what they want
Our Advanced Care at Home program provides high-quality, safe care in familiar, comfortable surroundings.
When Dorothy Dillahunty needed ongoing medical care, she got it in the comfort of her home thanks to our Advanced Care at Home program.
Dorothy Dillahunty had a bad stomachache.
She went to the emergency room, and doctors found she had an infection in her intestines. She needed treatment and to be checked often.
Her doctor said she would do well with our Advanced Care at Home program. The program lets some patients get care at home instead of in the hospital or other settings.
Dillahunty didn’t hesitate.
“I told them that I would love it,” she said. “Nothing like being at home when you’re sick.”
How does Advanced Care at Home work?
Patients in the program get high-quality, 24/7 care.
“We can provide them food. We can do X-rays, ultrasounds, and electrocardiograms in the home setting,” said Vance Purcell, a registered nurse who oversees Advanced Care at Home clinical operations for Kaiser Permanente. “And they’re at less risk of hospital-acquired infections or other complications.”
Who’s eligible for the program?
Patients may be able to choose Advanced Care at Home if they have health problems like infections, heart trouble, or pneumonia. Your doctor will help you determine if you’re eligible.*
The program is available in most areas we serve. Soon, we expect to offer it everywhere we provide care.
Easy care setup at home
Dillahunty got the specific equipment she needed for her care. She received a tablet, a blood pressure cuff, and a device that let her connect directly with her nurses.
Our experts set everything up for her. She got medical attention every day, either in person or online.
“Whenever I became distressed or needed to talk to a doctor or nurse, I could always call them 24/7,” Dillahunty said.
‘In my own bed and around my family’
Dillahunty was grateful to heal at home with familiar faces nearby.
“I think Kaiser Permanente has an excellent program going on here,” Dillahunty said. “I was in my own bed and around my family — my kids, grandkids. And that whole environment, it helped me heal well.”
