About me

I was born at The Queen's Medical Center and lived in Honolulu until I was 11 years old, when my family moved to Aiea. In high school I especially enjoyed science and math. Luckily, two of my closest friends shared my passions, and we went to Loma Linda University School of Medicine together many years later.

About my practice

One of my uncles was a surgeon in Okinawa, Japan, and as I was growing up, he and his wife took a special interest in mentoring me. The dedication my uncle demonstrated toward his patients and his profession inspired me to go into medicine. Family medicine appeals to me as a specialty because it allows me to care for patients from birth to old age and to develop relationships over time. This field also provides a challenging, constantly changing learning environment. I'm a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and I volunteer at my son's school. To stay current in my field, I participate in a forum that reviews the most recent developments in medicine. I also search out the latest information related to my patients’ medical conditions as they arise. In addition to English, I speak medical Spanish.

I joined Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG) because I believe it’s on the leading edge of changes in medicine. It’s a well-organized practice that has many people working on different projects and ideas. Within family medicine, I enjoy seeing my colleagues find their niches and special interests. Also, my values match those of HPMG — practicing affordable medicine based on research and always doing the right thing for patients.

I enjoy all of my encounters with patients and look forward to learning from their life experiences. I think people know themselves best and will often tell me their diagnoses, if I just listen hard enough. Understanding the obstacles they face helps me to assist them in becoming healthier and in realizing their full potential. I believe that my role is to empower and inspire people, not by telling them what to do, but by offering lifestyle and treatment options.

How I thrive

I practice yoga to stay balanced and healthy. Outside of work, I look forward to getting together with family and friends. I also enjoy reading, gardening, traveling, and spending time in nature, whether relaxing on the beach or hiking in the mountains.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
