Where I practice
About me
I was born in East Los Angeles and raised in a Hawaiian-Chinese family. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, attended medical school at the University of California, Davis, and completed my internship at the University of California, San Francisco and residency at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. During residency, I served as chief resident, received an award for excellence in graduate medical education, and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. I’m board certified in family medicine.
My path in medicine has been shaped by my family. My mother, a social worker, taught me that compassion is an action, not just a value, and that every person deserves dignity and respect. My grandmother, a refugee from Guangzhou, China, immigrated to the U.S. during World War II despite being illiterate. She embodied resilience and courage – and showed me how strength and hope can carry you through even the most uncertain circumstances.
To ensure I didn’t forget my Hawaiian roots, as a youngster, I spent many summers on Oahu fishing off Makua Caves. My family impressed upon me the importance of contributing to the community, and it’s a privilege to be back in Hawai‘i delivering care.
About my practice
Serving as my mother’s primary caregiver through kidney failure, diabetes, glioblastoma, and difficult decision-making, I was grateful for the support and comfort that her physicians and providers gave to my family. As a family medicine physician, I vowed to do the same for others, basing my practice on empathy and trust.
In family medicine, I get to build relationships in different settings and at all stages of life. My experiences in Nepal and rural Hawai‘i taught me to listen closely, adapt to each situation, and care for people within the context of their families, culture, and available resources. I realized that healing doesn’t depend solely on technology and modern medicine, but on presence, partnership, and problem-solving.
I've given presentations at medical conferences and published research on heart disease in women, reproductive justice in rural Hawai‘i, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in health care.
How I thrive
I enjoy dancing, doing yoga, hiking, fishing, camping, and going on adventures with my family. I do crafts with my toddler, design and make origami jewelry, promote aloha wear businesses, and practice my Hawaiian, Cantonese, Nepali, and Spanish.
Outside of work, I’m involved with the Himalayan Community Foundation, the Biology Scholars Program, the Ka‘u High School Health Pathways Program, ‘Ahahui o nā Kauka (the Association of Native Hawaiian Physicians), the Ka‘u Rural Health Community Association, and the Hawai‘i State Rural Health Association, for which I serve as a mentor.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.
A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
