Where I practice
I was born in Honolulu and feel very fortunate to have lived and studied here my entire life. I went to medical school at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine, where I also did my internship and residency in internal medicine.
About my practice
I’ve always been fascinated by the basic sciences, especially biology and chemistry, and I also wanted to use my knowledge to help others. I decided to become a primary care physician because I enjoy interacting with people on a daily basis and establishing long-term relationships. To stay up-to-date on medical issues, I read medical journals, participate in continuing medical education programs, and attend professional conferences. When I was a medical student, I presented a poster that examined the relationship between fat intake and dementia at an American Geriatrics Society conference. It’s a pleasure to work with the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group because of its emphasis on primary care. The close coordination of my practice with specialty care and hospital care gives me access to the information and resources I need to take the best care of my patients. Great technology and excellent support staff are also a huge help in creating an atmosphere that allows providers to focus on the patients and their needs. My philosophy is that a healthy lifestyle is the best medicine. Although pills and other treatments may be needed, a balanced diet and a regular exercise program can greatly enhance the effectiveness of these medications. One of the most rewarding aspects of practicing as a physician is bonding with my patients by listening to their stories, striving to understand their beliefs and values, and making sure they have all the information they need to make decisions about their health.
How I thrive
To stay healthy, I snorkel at Hanauma Bay and swim at the pool or beach. Cutting back on watching television has given me more time to exercise, cook healthy food, and sleep – the TV stays off unless I’m on my stationary bike! For relaxation, I enjoy spending time with my family, singing karaoke with friends, and watching musicals, both on film and at local community theaters.
