About me
Welcome. I am Dr. Tonya An, and I am grateful for the opportunity to care for members as an orthopedic surgeon and foot and ankle specialist. I hope this page helps you get to know my background, my approach to care, and the values that guide my practice.
Biography
I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained foot and ankle specialist with experience in both academic and community-based practice. I completed my orthopedic surgery residency in Los Angeles and advanced fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery in New York. Before joining Kaiser Permanente, I practiced as an assistant clinical professor at Stanford University. I chose orthopedic surgery because I enjoy helping people restore mobility, independence, and function. As a musculoskeletal specialist, I can care for a broad range of conditions, including fractures, arthritis, tendon disorders, sports injuries, and nerve-related problems. Foot and ankle surgery is a focused subspecialty within orthopedics surgery, with only 30 to 40 fellowship-trained surgeons graduating each year. I appreciate the unique complexity of the foot and ankle, where small joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and bones all work together to support standing, walking, balance, and activity. My clinical interests include sports injuries, ankle arthritis, tendon disorders, flatfoot deformity, bunions, cartilage injuries, fractures, nerve compression, and complex lower extremity reconstruction. I care for members using both nonsurgical and surgical approaches, depending on the diagnosis, the member’s goals, and current evidence and research.
About my practice
Although I specialize in foot and ankle surgery, I see myself as a physician first. I believe it is important to understand your overall health, including medical conditions such as diabetes, vascular disease, inflammatory disease, and weight-related issues that can affect the lower extremities and influence healing. My goal is to give you a clear understanding of your diagnosis, your treatment options, and what to expect during recovery. I value shared decision-making and want you to feel informed and involved in your care. When surgery is appropriate, I focus on thoughtful planning, careful techniques, and a recovery plan that supports your long-term function. When nonsurgical care is the better path, I work with you to create a practical plan that may include activity modification, therapy, bracing, medications, injections, or other treatments. I also believe that orthopedic problems often connect to the body as a whole. Pain in the foot or ankle may affect the knee, hip, back, balance, and activity level. I aim to evaluate these issues carefully and help guide you to the right care when another specialist or treatment team member is needed.
How I thrive
Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my family and my dog and staying active outdoors. I value a balanced life and try to bring that same perspective to member care. I also enjoy teaching, mentoring, tracking, and optimizing outcomes through standardized care. Whether I am caring for an athlete, a working professional, a parent, or an older adult hoping to stay mobile, I find meaning in helping people return to the activities that matter most to them.
