About me

Welcome to my Web page. I truly enjoy surgical pathology and teaching. I have a special interest in head and neck and endocrine organ pathology. Hundreds of times per year, I receive pathology and cytology specimens for a second opinion and diagnosis.

I was born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa. I completed a B.S. degree in business administration (with an emphasis on finance) at Washington University in 1984. I completed medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1988 while also teaching anatomy to dental and physical therapy students. After an orthopedic surgery internship in 1989, I completed my pathology residence at UCLA. Under the direct influence of my mentors, I became very interested in head and neck and endocrine organ pathology, as well as cytology. I worked for a decade at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, D.C., developing a specific interest in pathology of the head and neck and endocrine organs. While at this institute, I served as Chief, Division of Otorhinolaryngic Pathology and Chief, Division of Immunohistochemistry.

About my practice

I have published more than 270 research papers. I am editor-in-chief of the Head and Neck Pathology Journal. I teach at national and international conferences, and am an active member of national and international medical societies. I collaborated on two books for the World Health Organization and have published six medical textbooks: Head and Neck Pathology (2 editions), Endocrine Pathology, Diagnostic Pathology and Molecular Genetics of the Thyroid (2 editions), and Diagnostic Pathology: Head and Neck.

How I thrive

A lifelong vegetarian, I have always thought of myself as a healthy person. I go to the gym five or six days a week with a rigorous aerobic and weight-lifting regimen that keeps me physically fit and gives me extra energy. I am a retired US Navy Captain. Traveling is my favorite hobby. I have visited 119 countries and counting! I also enjoy creating stained-glass windows, making ceramics, creating wine cufflinks, scuba diving, and weight lifting.
