About me
Welcome to my Web page. It is my privilege to be part of your care team. As a board-certified medical oncologist, I specialize in prevention and treatment of and research in cancer, providing comprehensive and personalized care. I collaborate with other physicians to ensure that each member receives advanced treatments tailored to their needs. My commitment is to provide you with high-quality care, listen to your concerns, and help you make informed decisions that match your goals and values. I believe in treating not just the disease, but the whole person with compassion, support, and the latest advancements in cancer treatment.
Biography
I earned my bachelor's degree in biochemistry and biophysics from the University of Houston. I spent four years at MD Anderson Cancer Center performing cancer research and completed my medical degree at Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1992. My internship and residency in internal medicine were followed by a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Arizona under the direction of renowned hematologist/oncologist Dr. Sydney Salmon. I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1998 and currently serve as the regional Oncology chief at Southern California Permanente Medical Group. I am a sub-investigator in many clinical research trials.
About my practice
My Cancer Subspecialty Focus
My primary focus is breast and genomic oncology, where I focus on targeted therapies and precision medicine to improve outcomes. I am committed to using genetic insights to develop individual treatment plans for each member.
National Expertise on Multidisciplinary Teams
I am a physician leader involved in numerous cancer committees and oversight of multidisciplinary care. Through this, I help ensure quality in cancer treatment by closely working with cancer-trained surgeons, radiation oncologists, hematologists, and specialized nurses to deliver high-quality care. Through leading the genomic oncology program at Kaiser Permanente and building the platform of care pathways, I help assure that treatments are based on evidence and current research and that genomic tests and imaging modalities are available to our physicians. I work closely with cancer geneticists to develop systems with the newest tests to diagnose high-risk members early and perform close follow-up.
Research and Clinical Trials
I am a proud member of several prestigious oncology research groups and the National Cancer Institute’s Community Oncology Program. Through this program, I am actively involved in offering promising treatments through clinical trials as a sub-investigator in:
- SWOG Cancer Research Network
- National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP)
- Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology
- NRG Oncology
In addition to advancing cancer outcome beyond treatment, I perform cancer survivorship research through the National Cancer Institute to help ensure that beyond treatment completion, members receive total health care and reduce risk of complications and recurrence. My work aims to advance cancer treatment options and improve outcomes toward cure.
How I thrive
Outside of my medical practice, I cherish spending time with my family. Our home is always full of energy with my children’s love for soccer, volleyball, and music. Personally, I enjoy hiking, swimming, cooking, and attending musicals and concerts. Professionally, I get energized by volunteering with national cancer organizations. Staying active, connected, and involved helps me bring my best self to members every day.
