Where I practice
Hello, my name is Basil Abdelkarim, and I've been a practicing physician since graduating from the UC San Diego School of Medicine in 1996. I joined the Kaiser Permanente Department of Internal Medicine in 1999, fresh out of residency, initially on a part-time basis. I enjoyed the experience and the relationships I had established so much that I decided to remain. Since 2001 I've been a staff hospitalist, which means I take care of members who have been admitted to the hospital.
I was born and raised in the Greater Los Angeles area. Indeed, I've spent my entire life in Southern California, attending UCLA as an undergraduate and completing both medical school and residency not far from home. I'm married with five young children (including a set of triplets). When not in the hospital, I enjoy outings with the family, recreational reading, trips to the movie theater, and regular exercise. I'm also an avid fan of local sports teams (Lakers, Dodgers, Angels).
About my practice
I feel privileged to work with an outstanding collection of physicians, nurses, and support staff at Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center. My goal every day I arrive at work is to continue to provide high-quality, compassionate care to each and every member I encounter. The experience of being a physician has been truly rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity I have been granted to serve in this profession.
How I thrive
Exercise is an important part of my regular routine and something I genuinely enjoy. With a busy work schedule and family life, I do my best to blend a moderate cardiovascular routine with family activities (hikes, long walks, etc.) in addition to trips to the gym and the use of home exercise equipment.
