About me
I'm glad to have the opportunity to present my credentials to you and share other information about myself. It's very important that you feel comfortable with your personal physician, and I hope this page will help you get to know me.
Biography
I was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq, where I completed my medical training at the University of Baghdad. I was then awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue graduate studies in public health and clinical research in the United States. During that time, I passed the US Medical Licensing Examination and subsequently completed my general surgery residency, followed by fellowship training in complex surgical oncology in Southern California.
I am married and blessed with 2 wonderful children: a boy and a girl.
About my practice
I am board certified by the American Board of Surgery in both general surgery and complex general surgical oncology.
As a surgical oncologist, my practice treats a wide range of cancers, including head and neck, thyroid and parathyroid, breast, melanoma, sarcoma, and gastrointestinal malignancies. My particular area of expertise is gastric cancer, from both a clinical and research perspective.I also serve as a clinical associate professor at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. As a member of the Southern California Regional Subspecialty Gastrointestinal Oncology Committee and an active participant in the regional gastrointestinal, surgical oncology, and sarcoma multidisciplinary tumor boards, I am deeply involved in managing complex cancer cases. I also contribute to discussions that shape our regional standards of care, including surgical and systemic therapy pathways.
My care philosophy is based in individualized treatment — tailoring surgery and care to each member’s unique situation.I believe that every surgical decision and every move in the operating room can profoundly impact a member’s outcome, longevity, and survival. I approach each operation as if it were being performed on a member of my own family. I am committed to giving members hope, supporting them throughout their cancer journey, and ensuring that care is both technically advanced and deeply compassionate.
I serve as the research chair at the Panorama City Medical Center and am a member of the Regional Research Committee. My research focuses primarily on gastric cancer outcomes, including optimizing surgical margins and evaluating surgical strategies for stage IV gastric cancer. I am a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) Gastrointestinal Disease Site Working Group and the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Gastric Cancer Guidelines Task Force. In addition, I serve as a research mentor at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. I am recognized as both a regional and national expert in gastric cancer and robotic gastric surgery, and my work integrates extensive clinical experience with a strong commitment to advancing the field through collaborative research and numerous national conference presentations.
How I thrive
Spending quality time with my wife and 2 children is one of my greatest joys. I enjoy hiking, playing soccer, and traveling, which help me recharge and maintain the balance needed to thrive personally and professionally.
