About me

I was born in Tokyo, where I later met my wife, and spent my childhood in Australia, Egypt, and the United States. After attending high school in Maryland, I earned my medical degree from the University of Tokyo in Japan. I then completed my internship and residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. I also earned a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where I was named to the dean’s list.

Board-certified in internal medicine and critical care, I’m a clinical assistant professor at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. I’m affiliated with the American College of Physicians, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the American Bar Association. In addition, I’ve received multiple teaching awards and an international scholar award.

Our son’s love of baseball brought us to the islands. We quickly came to appreciate the warmth of the people and the natural beauty here, and we’re grateful to call Hawaii home.

About my practice

Growing up in a family of diplomats, I dreamed of building bridges across cultures through mutual respect and a shared commitment to bettering people's lives. At Kaiser Permanente, I can serve a diverse community, combining the strengths of Japanese and American medicine.

My training in internal medicine, anesthesiology, and law has taught me to be an advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. I strive to listen with empathy, communicate with honesty, and be there during life's difficult moments. Along with our outstanding critical care team, I want every patient and family to feel heard, supported, and never alone.

My interests include sepsis physiology, organ blood flow, patient safety, quality improvement, risk management, and medical education. In the U.S. and Japan, I’ve addressed multidisciplinary collaboration, health care policy, and “Just Culture,” which manages errors in a non-punitive manner, resulting in a safer and more efficient care environment.

Formerly, I led the flagship institution of Japan’s largest medical system. As hospital director, I advanced patient safety, multidisciplinary care, and hospital governance, guiding the institution through a complex organizational landscape. Through my experiences with different cultures, I learned to appreciate diverse perspectives. This lesson continues to guide me as a physician.

How I thrive

I enjoy doing activities with others, whether surfing with friends, playing tennis with my wife, playing catch with my son, or walking our dog. This enhances my sense of connection and well-being, helping me care for my patients with renewed energy and clarity. I also enjoy reading, watching films, spending time outdoors, cycling, watching youth baseball, and traveling. I volunteer with a Japanese non-profit organization that provides a nurturing afterschool alternative for elementary school children. To support my own health, I prioritize nutritious eating, home cooking, good sleep, and preventive medicine.

Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities

Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing accessible facilities, services, and programs for all members, visitors and individuals with disabilities. In compliance with federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination based on disability, Kaiser Permanente provides:

  1. accessible exam rooms and medical equipment;
  2. free auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication with individuals with hearing, vision, cognitive, and/or communication-related disabilities, including qualified sign language interpreter services and informational materials in alternative formats (large print, audio tape/CDs, accessible PDFs or Microsoft Word documents, electronic texts/disks/CD-ROMS, and Braille); and
  3. access to service animals, except where the animal poses a significant health or safety risk(s) to others.

For more information about access to a specific facility or provider, or if you believe that Kaiser Permanente has failed to provide appropriate access or services or otherwise discriminated on the basis of a disability, please contact Member Services toll-free 1-800-966-5955 or TTY 711, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. or Saturday, 8 a.m. – noon. You may also file a grievance with the Kaiser Permanente Civil Rights Coordinator by mail or phone at: Membership Services, Attn: Kaiser Civil Rights Coordinator, 711 Kapiolani Blvd, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813, or by calling 1-800-966-5955, TTY 711.

The availability and use of the Kaiser Permanente grievance procedure does not prevent a person from filing a complaint of discrimination on the basis of disability with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights or the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
