About me

I was born on Oahu and was grew up in Pearl City. I went to Mid Pacific Institute, Seattle University, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Maryland. I then went on to do a transitional internship at Tripler Army Medical Center and a residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I’m board certified in anesthesiology.

My parents, a retired nurse and a military retiree, both came from humble beginnings. They strove to provide me with the best possible education and the greatest opportunities to succeed. They and my brothers, sisters, and grandmother helped to mold me into the person I am today, and for that I’m forever grateful.

My wife, whom I met in high school, supported me through medical school and residency while enduring East Coast winters. She was there during some of my most challenging moments and always understood how important it was to me to accomplish the dream of becoming a physician. I promised her that one day we’d return home.

About my practice

My interest in medicine was sparked in a high school biology lab. After shadowing a pediatrician and volunteering in an emergency department, I grew to become comfortable in clinical settings. At first I thought I’d become a pediatrician because I liked working with children, their families, and various pediatric staff throughout the hospital. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of patients and provide a level of care that I felt everyone deserved.

During medical school, however, I realized that I was happiest when I heard patients express their gratitude for what we did for them while they were under anesthesia. I also enjoyed assisting patients in a variety of surgeries, allaying their fears, discussing complex cases with colleagues, and participating in the team approach used by Hawaii Permanente Medical Group at the time of surgery.

How I thrive

I try to work out several days a week, mixing cardio and weightlifting. I use my free time to pursue outdoor activities that help me clear and reset my mind. I love going to my kids’ soccer games, watching their ballet performances, and seeing them grow. I also enjoy fishing, hunting, and snowboarding.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
