Where I practice
I was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs. After completing my residency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin I moved to Long Beach, California, to explore a different part of the country with a warmer climate. That’s where I met my husband, who is a skilled musician and freediving and spearfishing enthusiast. He had lived in Hawaii previously and wanted to return to the beautiful environment and outdoor lifestyle, so we moved to Kona in 2001. Today we have two great sons and live happily on the Big Island.
About my practice
I was introduced to the world of medicine by my stepfather who was a respiratory therapist and often took me with him to work. My visits to the hospital were very exciting, and through my stepfather’s strong encouragement and my personal love of science, I decided to become a doctor. Practicing internal medicine was not my original plan. I initially hoped to become a pediatrician because interacting with children is so much fun, but after my third year of medical rotations, I realized that I enjoyed adult medicine even more. I like the challenge of figuring out what a patient’s ailments are and then helping them to get better or to reach their optimal health. My philosophy of care is based on prevention and a healthy way of life. I prefer to promote “healthy lifestyles” over “medications,” and strive to help my patients learn the best ways to take care of themselves. I appreciate getting to know my patients on a personal level and hearing about their interests, families and life travels. I enjoy sharing common experiences and activities as we get to know each other. As a member of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, I appreciate the opportunities I have to collaborate with my wonderful colleagues as leaders in delivering quality care. I am also always impressed with the quality of our specialists and how helpful and responsive they are. Our clinic staff is incredible too; we are like a family and have lots of fun together in all that we do.
How I thrive
I stay physically active with my family by going to the beach and hiking. I also like to walk and enjoy Zumba®. To relax, I enjoy cooking healthy meals and picking up a good book for some personal reading time.
