Where I practice
About me
I was born and raised in rural South Dakota. I graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Dakota. While I was there, I worked as a research assistant on studies to help improve recovery from strokes and certain movement disorders. I then pursued my optometry degree at the University of Houston. There, I analyzed a novel method of diagnosing macular degeneration and was a member of the international optometric honor society Beta Sigma Kappa.
After graduating, I opened a private practice in Los Angeles, where I served as president of the Los Angeles County Optometric Society, and later moved to Monterey, where I was president of the Monterey Bay Optometric Society. I'm grateful to have been recognized as Young Optometrist of the Year and Key Person of the Year by the California Optometric Association.
While in Monterey, my wife and I visited the Hawaiian Islands several times. We fell in love with the natural beauty and the aloha spirit, and decided to make Hawaii our home.
About my practice
My parents owned a small private medical office. As I watched them treat their patients like family, I was inspired to do the same, and I strive to treat every patient as ohana.
I've always wanted a career that allows me to help others, and optometry enables me to do so in a profoundly personal way. Many of my family members have experienced poor vision and eye disorders, and we've been fortunate to have benefited from glasses, contact lenses, refractive surgery, and treatments that have halted ocular disease progression.
I find it incredibly rewarding to help my patients achieve similar results and improve their quality of life. I'm particularly interested in specialty contact lenses, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.
I believe medical providers can gain insight about health care solutions by learning from other cultures around the world. I studied abroad in Germany and Sweden, which made me appreciate how Kaiser Permanente takes a more global approach to improving patient care, such as focusing on preventive medicine, integrating health records, and treating each patient as a complex individual.
How I thrive
My wife and I enjoy snorkeling, hiking, and traveling. I'm involved in the Hawaii Optometric Association and perform community outreach with Life Hope Centers and the Alliance of Jamaican and American Humanitarians, volunteering at local vision screenings and international mission trips.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.
A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
