About me

I was born in Manhattan and grew up in the faculty housing for Rockefeller University, surrounded by brilliant scientists with a passion for healing and improving the world. I pursued my undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston and then returned to New York City for my medical training, completing medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Thereafter, I did a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, where the first U.S. heart transplant was successfully performed. I initially worked as a heart failure cardiologist at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, where we helped the sickest patients with heart failure improve their quality of life and survival with specialized heart pumps called left ventricular assist devices. I came to Hawaii with the hopes of making a meaningful contribution to cardiac care in the islands and raising my children in this wonderful culture of aloha.

About my practice

My research scientist parents fostered in me an appreciation for science, and from a young age I knew I wanted to study medicine. I’m fascinated by the complex workings of the heart and welcome the challenge of caring for patients with advanced cardiac disease. I love using scientific knowledge to enhance people’s lives and give them a new lease on life, whether with medications, mechanical support, or heart transplantation. My medical interests include congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation, and medical education.

I enjoy teaching and lecturing about cardiology and was the keynote speaker for the 2018 “Red Set Go” heart luncheon at the Olympic Medical Center and discussed complex heart failure management at the 5th Annual Heart Failure Symposium at the University of Washington. I’ve also been featured in television interviews in Seattle focusing on the presentation of heart disease in women and discussing the remarkable recovery of one of my patients from cardiac arrest. I’ve published articles centering on the management of cardiogenic shock and atrial fibrillation in cryptogenic stroke in peer-reviewed specialty journals.

To stay up-to-date on the latest developments in my field, I read online journals, attend conferences, and engage in dialogues with my peers and mentors throughout the country. My professional organizations—the American College of Cardiology and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation—also help me to stay abreast of innovations in cardiology and advanced heart failure.

I chose to work at Hawaii Permanente Medical Group because I was impressed with the caliber, dedication, and collegiality of the group. I’m so grateful to be working in an organization of this quality.

My approach to care is to empower my patients so they understand their conditions and are able to make informed decisions about their treatment options. I enjoy getting to know them and their families and working with them as a team to achieve the best results.

How I thrive

To stay healthy, I eat nutritious foods, exercise, go hiking, play tennis, and practice yoga and meditation. I especially value time with my husband and two kids, going on outdoor adventures, doing water sports, and exploring the world.

Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities

Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing accessible facilities, services, and programs for all members, visitors and individuals with disabilities. In compliance with federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination based on disability, Kaiser Permanente provides:

  1. accessible exam rooms and medical equipment;
  2. free auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication with individuals with hearing, vision, cognitive, and/or communication-related disabilities, including qualified sign language interpreter services and informational materials in alternative formats (large print, audio tape/CDs, accessible PDFs or Microsoft Word documents, electronic texts/disks/CD-ROMS, and Braille); and

For more information about access to a specific facility or provider, or if you believe that Kaiser Permanente has failed to provide appropriate access or services or otherwise discriminated on the basis of a disability, please contact Member Services toll-free 1-800-966-5955 or TTY 711, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. or Saturday, 8 a.m. – noon. You may also contact or file a grievance with the Kaiser Permanente Civil Rights Coordinator in person, by mail, fax or email at: 711 Kapiolani Blvd, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813, civil-rights-coordinator@kp.org, or toll-free 1-800-966-5955, TTY 711.

The availability and use of the Kaiser Permanente grievance procedure does not prevent a person from filing a complaint of discrimination on the basis of disability with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights or the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
